Editorial introduction

Trust in God begins, unexpectedly, with getting to work. Bahá’u’lláh defines true reliance as pursuing one’s calling while holding fast to the Lord, and ‘Abdu’l-Bahá tells a debtor to practise economy, a traveller to rely on means wherever he goes, and a worried family to strive and then be at ease. ‘Alí’s rooftop answer to a challenger, certain of God’s protection yet never turning danger into a test, keeps such confidence from sliding into bravado; the Gospel’s counsel against anxiety and its refusal to tempt God draw the same line [2], and the Qur’an binds trust to consultation and to a decision already taken [1]. Reliance of this kind is not the absence of grief. Letters to the bereaved, the ill and the exiled let sorrow speak before they turn the heart toward remembrance and gratitude, which is where trust borders on consolation and on detachment from possessions and approval. It deepens into prayer that admits we do not know what truly profits us, into servitude, and into steadfastness when opposition comes. To entrust the future is to keep working and keep asking while the outcome rests in other hands.

Therefore one must trust in God and hold fast to divine fear, for "whosoever fears God, He will make for him a way out, and provide for him from where he expects not."

(‘Abdu’l-Bahá, 1919-Sep-25, to Son of Ashraf -- AB02113)

How often has a small force overcome a numerous one! When there is trust [in God], divine confirmations will surely arrive.

(‘Abdu’l-Bahá, to Hamadani, Ali Ibn Abu-Talib et al -- AB06756)
86

Put thy trust in God and seek assistance and grace from the Most Glorious Beauty. Verily, He will aid thee through the treasures of His Kingdom, the wealth of His Dominion, and the riches of His Realm.

(‘Abdu’l-Bahá, 1903 ca., to Dr Muhammad Salih -- AB08552)
87

God, exalted be His glory, hath said: "Verily, with hardship goeth ease." It is hoped that affairs will be set right. With the generous, tasks are not difficult. That soul should not be sorrowful. The affairs of the world have ever alternated between hardship and ease, yet bounty is from God and generosity from Him. Assuredly these hardships will be followed by mercy, and this difficulty by ease. Soon will He fulfill His promise and manifest that which beseemeth His might, His majesty and His generosity.

(Bahá’u’lláh, 1308-10-07 [1891-May-16], to Haji Mirza Abul-qasim Nazir (Jinab-i-Nazir) -- BH00685)
88

However, God saith: "Whoso placeth his reliance on God, He is sufficient unto him." Therefore I remain patient, calm, silent and assured.

(Bahá’u’lláh, 1305-07-01 [1888-Mar-14], to Aqa Ali Yazdi -- BH01746)

(‘Abdu’l-Bahá, 1903-Nov-21, to Muhammad Kazim Lari -- AB08610)
90

Be not distressed at the delay of matters. For every matter there is an appointed time from the presence of the Ordainer, the All-Powerful. God willing, purify thy heart from doubt and set forth with complete trust, for God is the best protector and He is the Most Merciful of the merciful.

(Bahá’u’lláh, to Shaykh Salman Hindijani -- BH05300)
91

Be confident through the grace and favor of God, glory be to Him, and if there is some delay due to God's consummate wisdom, be not grieved. The hand of God has been and will continue to be your helper.

(Bahá’u’lláh, 1303 ? [1885-1886], to Aqa Mirza Muhammad Ali Khan -- BH08179)
92

God has given man a heart and the heart must have some attachment. We have proved that nothing completely worthy of our heart's devotion save reality, for all else is destined to perish. Therefore the heart is never at rest and never finds real joy and happiness until it attaches itself to the eternal.

(‘Abdu’l-Bahá -- ABU1890)

94

(‘Abdu’l-Bahá, Words to Madam J, spoken on 1904-Apr-15 -- ABU1711)

(‘Abdu’l-Bahá, Words spoken on 1912-Jul-17 in New York -- ABU2355)
96

This turning the face toward God is the healing of the body, the mind and the soul. When this advancement toward God has become complete, one is able to overcome passion and desire, become protected from sin and transgression and be delivered from heedlessness. It will bestow eternal life and grant the imperishable gift.

(‘Abdu’l-Bahá -- ABU2696)
97

The meaning is that one must trust in God and whatever comes to pass should be considered the essence of wisdom.

… Whatever you do, do it for God's sake not in hope of this or that person, and whatever you want, ask it from God not from His servants.

(‘Abdu’l-Bahá, to Ali Muhammad Khan Tabib -- AB02698)
98

First, fhou shouldst under all conditions be filled with joy, exultation, and gladness. Resignation to the Will of God is the soul of happiness and the link connecting the most opposite characters. When a soul acquires the quality of resignation the outward conditions of life will not disturb his inward peace nor the collapse of nations will not disturb the equilibrium of his mind.

(‘Abdu’l-Bahá, Words to the friends, spoken on 1915-Apr-10 -- ABU1189)

102

Trust in God and seek His aid. Come what may!

(‘Abdu’l-Bahá, to Mashhadi Mihdi Quli -- AB10061)
107

Man must seek to gain the acceptance of God and not that of the different classes of men. If one is praised and chosen by God, the accusation of all the creatures will cause no loss to him; and if the man is not accepted in the threshold of God, the praise and admiration of all men will be of no use to him.

(‘Abdu’l-Bahá, 1901-Jan-19, to Arthur P Dodge -- AB01053)
108

He doeth as He doeth, and what recourse have we? He carrieth out His Will, He ordaineth what He pleaseth. Then better for thee to bow down thy head in submission, and put thy trust in the All-Merciful Lord.

(‘Abdu’l-Bahá, to Abu'l-Hasan Khan -- AB08838)

In all matters place thy trust in God and detach thyself from all else but Him. In these grievous days when the intoxication of existence hath encompassed all creation, be not heedless of the celestial realm of His love's constancy, and like unto the sun, shine forth with the effulgences of the love of the Sovereign Lord of names and attributes, that the lights of the beauty of the Chosen One may be made manifest through thee among the servants.

O true friends in Tehran, take note! In these days certain events have transpired in this prison, all of which are from the hidden ordinances and undoubted decrees. Each time I came to this place of glory, why were these people bewildered and tested, and how was the truth of the enduring Word (may my spirit and all who are known to God be sacrificed for Him) made manifest, as He said what is mentioned in Al-Nu'mani's Book of Occultation: "Azerbaijan is inevitable for us, nothing can withstand it" etc. Indeed, I have no recourse but to commit my affair to God and seek relief from Him, for He sees His servants. Though I have no equal in grief today, since it is in God's path there is perfect contentment and joy.

"Be as a zealous lion for God until He decrees with justice and thereafter brings about His Cause. Fear not the onslaught of the satans, for they are but uprooted shadows without proof, neither in the Book of Truth nor before creation, nor even in their own eyes. Their likeness is as the likeness of a dog: if thou attack it, it pants with its tongue out, and if thou leave it, it pants with its tongue out. Still their excessive panting with a mighty gift that thou mayest find rest from their evil. Draw not nigh unto those who have wronged lest their torment touch thee, for they have no life in them. Walk with them toward thy goal, for this is permitted to the believers in the Book of God." [BB00072]

The best of all knowledge is the knowledge of courage in this world. When thou findest thyself like unto a mountain which neither storms can move nor thunderbolts displace, then hast thou attained the summit of the Cause and its ultimate end.

Be of good cheer, inasmuch as the Lord of the worlds hath, from the Most Great Prison, turned His gaze toward thee. Rejoice in thy soul, for thy Best-Beloved hath set upon His head the crown of Manifestation and hath imparted unto thee this glad-tiding. Be gladdened in thy spirit, for the Trustworthy Spirit, together with a company of angels, is present and hath attained unto the hearing of those words which, out of pure grace, have descended from the heaven of bounty. Rejoice in thy speech, for the Kingdom of utterance is occupied with thy remembrance.

O 'Ali-Qabl-'Askar! The causes of thy joy have ever been, and still are, beyond all mention and expression, sanctified above reckoning and the tongue’s recital. The first of these is turning unto the Most Exalted Horizon; the second, the recognition of the Lord of the kingdom of names; the third, the hearkening unto the call from the mouths of His chosen ones; the fourth, the beholding of His signs in the days of God. In brief, the causes of gladness are many. It is Our hope that henceforth thou mayest be happy of heart, joyous of soul, and gladdened in spirit, for these are the days of the Most Great Rejoicing. And should aught at times appear which, by reason of the consummate wisdom of God, seemeth outwardly contrary thereto, assuredly that very thing is the cause of the manifestation of heavenly blessings and celestial banquets.

Ponder thou the events that have come to pass in the land of Ya. By My life! Every one of them hath served to exalt the Word of God and to uplift His Cause. Whatsoever appeareth in the days of the Manifestation---even though outwardly it be abasement---hath a hundred thousand honors concealed within it; and though it seem chastisement, a hundred thousand mercies lie hidden therein. Did the heedless souls but know the mysteries of martyrdom, never would they commit such deeds. But God hath set a seal upon their mouths, their eyes, their minds, and their understanding, inasmuch as they accounted the mighty gain as loss, and, with their own hands, rendered assistance unto the Cause, though they perceive it not. Verily, He aideth His Cause at one time through His enemies, and at another through His friends.

From the Most Exalted Pen there was revealed, concerning those pure and blessed souls, that which the world and its treasures and means can never equal. Ere long shall the heedless and the unjust behold the recompense of their deeds. Whatsoever hath befallen the branches of the Blessed Lote-Tree and His loved ones hath all been inscribed and recorded. Soon will God exalt them through His grace and assist them with His hosts. Praised be God, the honored Afnan are present in those regions and have been, and continue to be, confirmed under all conditions. Praised be God, Who hath exalted His noble servant and made manifest whatsoever He hath willed. Verily, He is the Almighty, the All-Powerful. The loved ones of that land have each one attained unto the remembrance of God, exalted be His glory.

Questions to carry forward

  1. How does the opening definition of reliance change when read with the rooftop exchange, the instructions to work and the accounts of consultation? Where might a decision in your own life call for both fuller effort and acceptance of an uncertain outcome?
  2. Compare Qur’an 3:159 with the letters about business partnerships and practical assistance. How can gentleness, clear responsibilities and honest consultation make trust visible between people as well as in relation to God?
  3. What do the passages that openly acknowledge grief add to those that counsel joy or freedom from sorrow? How might we offer consolation while honoring a person’s particular loss and avoiding promises the texts do not make to everyone?
  4. How do the Gospel readings distinguish freedom from anxiety from deliberately testing divine protection? What further light comes from the passages on discretion, physical danger, medical distress and the limits of our knowledge?
  5. The collection uses trust both for reliance and for something entrusted to a person. How do these meanings illuminate one another through trustworthy conduct, service and care for others? What tensions remain between detachment and human responsibility?
  6. Return to the closing prayers and their acknowledgment that we do not fully know what helps or harms us. How might such humility deepen prayer, steadfastness and thoughtful action? Which connected subject—consolation, detachment, prayer, servitude or steadfastness—would you explore next, and why?
