A call to the world: hearing, fairness, and the promise of renewal

Editorial introduction

Bahá’u’lláh addressed the peoples of the earth from a prison cell. That contrast runs through the whole of His summons: the Wronged One in ‘Akká, confined in the most desolate of cities, speaks as the Lord of Names and announces that He Whom the Books promised has come to reform the world and refine its nations. He asks first for something modest. Adorn yourselves with tranquility and dignity, He says; cast aside tyranny and look with the eye of fairness; judge for yourselves what has been sent down. Only then come the great images: gates flung open, a sun rising, living water offered without price, a Book that speaks, earth and sea and clouds bearing witness to the Day. Isaiah’s invitation to come to the waters belongs beside them, bounty freely given that still asks a changed life in return. The call presses one question on every listener: what makes hearing possible, and which inherited allegiance or treasured possession stands in the way? From here the same voice turns to the kings and rulers and to the divines of every faith, and the announcement becomes a call to action in the conduct of ordinary days.
