Signs of God in all things: learning to read creation

divine attributes are within all things; every atom

Editorial introduction

Bahá’u’lláh says that a single leaf holds volumes of knowledge and wisdom, and the Báb warns that even an ant carries within it the most excellent names of God, so that no creature may be belittled. To live by that teaching is to walk through a world that is always an open book, where every atom is a door and the sunlight on a stone, a tree, a mirror is one light received according to different capacities. The vision carries a discipline inside it: a sign is not the Essence, and the mirror that gives back the sun does not become the sun. Qur’an 2:164 reads day and night, the rain and the living creatures as signs for people who understand [1]. The road leads on into the interconnectedness of all things, into the development of capacity that decides how much light a being can hold, and into the human soul as the one mirror able to reflect every name at once, which is why such attentiveness ends in humility and love for people.

01

In a single leaf of a tree are inscribed and visible volumes of knowledge and wisdom, and the ocean of creation is apparent and surging.

(Bahá’u’lláh, 1305-08-28 [1888-May-10], to Haji Muhammad Husayn Yazdi -- BH02373)
02

Say: All things within their limits manifest the signs of the One in His presence. Can ye not see? Even if ye were to look upon an ant, ye would find within it all these most excellent names in its creation. Therefore, belittle not any of God's creatures, but look unto Him Who created all things by His command.

(The Báb, Kitab-i-Asma' (Book of Names), 1264 (late) or early 1265 [1848-1849] -- BB00003)
03

16. O ESSENCE OF NEGLIGENCE! Myriads of mystic tongues find utterance in one speech, and myriads of hidden mysteries are revealed in a single melody; yet, alas, there is no ear to hear, nor heart to understand.

… Out of the wastes of nothingness, with the clay of My command I made thee to appear, and have ordained for thy training every atom in existence and the essence of all created things.

(Bahá’u’lláh, Hidden Words - Persian, 1274 ca. [1857-1858] -- BH00113)
04

Look at the world and ponder a while upon it. It unveileth the book of its own self before thine eyes and revealeth that which the Pen of thy Lord, the Fashioner, the All-Informed, hath inscribed therein. It will acquaint thee with that which is within it and upon it and will give thee such clear explanations as to make thee independent of every eloquent expounder.

(Bahá’u’lláh, Lawh-i-Hikmat (Tablet of Wisdom), 1292? [1875-1876], to Mulla Muhammad Qa'ini (Nabil-i-Akbar) -- BH00223)
05

If these schools of progress lead to the university of heaven, then branches of knowledge will be developed whereby humanity will look upon the tablet of existence as a scroll endlessly unfolding; and all created things will be seen upon that scroll as letters and words. Then will the different planes of meaning be learned, and then within every atom of the universe will be witnessed the signs of the oneness of God.

(‘Abdu’l-Bahá, 1907-Mar-06, to E E Wrestling Brewster -- AB00276)
06

Nay, whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth is a direct evidence of the revelation within it of the attributes and names of God, inasmuch as within every atom are enshrined the signs that bear eloquent testimony to the revelation of that most great Light. Methinks, but for the potency of that revelation, no being could ever exist. How resplendent the luminaries of knowledge that shine in an atom, and how vast the oceans of wisdom that surge within a drop!

… Then will the manifold favors and outpouring grace of the holy and everlasting Spirit confer such new life upon the seeker that he will find himself endowed with a new eye, a new ear, a new heart, and a new mind. He will contemplate the manifest signs of the universe, and will penetrate the hidden mysteries of the soul. Gazing with the eye of God, he will perceive within every atom a door that leadeth him to the stations of absolute certitude. He will discover in all things the mysteries of divine Revelation and the evidences of an everlasting manifestation.

(Bahá’u’lláh, Kitab-i-Iqan (The Book of Certitude), 1278 ca. [1861-1862], to Haji Mirza Siyyid Muhammad, great uncle of the Bab (Khal-i-Akbar) -- BH00002)
07

Every created being however revealeth His signs which are but emanations from Him and not His Own Self. All these signs are reflected and can be seen in the book of existence, and the scrolls that depict the shape and pattern of the universe are indeed a most great book. … Consider the rays of the sun whose light hath encompassed the world. The rays emanate from the sun and reveal its nature, but are not the sun itself.

(Bahá’u’lláh, Kalimat-i-Firdawsiyyih (Words of Paradise), 1306-11-26 [1889-Jul-24], to Haji Mirza Haydar Ali Isfahani -- BH00111)
08

Unity is to behold the revelation of Truth in all signs, not to consider creation as Truth.

… God grant that, with a penetrating vision, thou mayest perceive, in all things, the sign of the revelation of Him Who is the Ancient King, and recognize how exalted and sanctified from the whole creation is that most holy and sacred Being. This, in truth, is the very root and essence of belief in the unity and singleness of God.

(Bahá’u’lláh, Commentary on a verse from Sa'di -- BH00245)
09

In another connection He saith: "O Sun-like Mirrors! Look ye upon the Sun of Truth. Ye, verily, depend upon it, were ye to perceive it. Ye are all as fishes, moving in the waters of the sea, veiling yourselves therefrom, and yet asking what it is on which ye depend." And likewise, He saith: "I complain unto thee, O Mirror of My generosity, against all the other Mirrors. All look upon Me through their own colors."

(Bahá’u’lláh, Lawh-i-Ibn-i-Dhi'b (Epistle to the Son of the Wolf), 1308 ? [1891], to Muhammad Taqi Isfahani (son of the Wolf) -- BH00005)
10

Through the pure bounty of His grace and the sublime excellence of His mercy, He hath deposited within all things that are seen and known the sign of His knowledge, that no thing might be deprived of recognizing His presence according to its capacity and station. And this sign is the mirror of His beauty in creation, and the more this most exalted, most wondrous, and most impregnable mirror is polished through striving and endeavor, the more shall the manifestations of His names and attributes and the evidences of His knowledge and signs be impressed and reflected therein, to such degree that every thing may witness in its place and every thing may know its limit and measure, and may hear from all things that there is no God but Him and that 'Ali-Qabli-Nabil is the Manifestation of all names and the Dawning-Place of all attributes, that all were created by His will and all act by His command.

… It is clear and evident that when the veils that conceal the realities of the manifestations of the Names and Attributes of God, nay of all created things visible or invisible, have been rent asunder, nothing except the Sign of God will remain—a sign which He, Himself, hath placed within these realities.

(Bahá’u’lláh, Lawh-i-Hadi - On He who knoweth himself knoweth His Lord, to Mirza Hadi -- BH00210)
11

All the perfections, bounties and splendours of the one true God are plainly visible in the realities of His Holy Manifestations, even as the light of the sun is fully reflected with all its perfections and bounties in a clear and spotless mirror. And if it be said that the mirrors are the manifestations of the sun and the dawning-places of the daystar of the world, this is not meant to imply that the sun has descended from the heights of its sanctity or has become embodied in the mirror, or that that limitless Reality has been confined to this visible plane. God forbid! This is the belief of the anthropomorphists.

(‘Abdu’l-Bahá, Chapter 37, The Connection between God and His Manifestations, 1904 ca. -- AB00105)
12

The Perfect Man, however, is even as a clear mirror in which the Sun of Truth is revealed and manifested in the fullness of its attributes and perfections. Thus the reality of Christ was a bright and polished mirror of the greatest purity and clarity. The Sun of Truth, the Essence of the Divinity, appeared in that mirror and manifested its light and heat therein, yet it did not descend from the heights of holiness and the heaven of sanctity to reside within it. No, it continues to abide in its loftiness and sublimity, but has been revealed and manifested in the mirror in all its beauty and perfection.

(‘Abdu’l-Bahá, Chapter 27, The Trinity, 1904 ca. -- AB00713)
13

It is clear, then, that the essential reality of God is revealed in His perfections; and the sun, with its perfections, reflected in a mirror, is a visible thing, an entity clearly expressing the bounty of God.

(‘Abdu’l-Bahá, 1921-May-01, to Mr A A Dan Zidgiz -- AB00103)
14

But the question may be asked: How shall we know God? We know Him by His attributes. We know Him by His signs. We know Him by His names. … If we wish to come in touch with the reality of Divinity, we do so by recognizing its phenomena, its attributes and traces, which are widespread in the universe. All things in the world of phenomena are expressive of that one reality. Its lights are shining, its heat is manifest, its power is expressive, and its education, or training, resplendent everywhere.

(‘Abdu’l-Bahá, Public address given at Parsons home on 1912-Nov-10 -- ABU0102)
15

How all-encompassing are the wonders of His boundless grace! Behold how they have pervaded the whole of creation. Such is their virtue that not a single atom in the entire universe can be found which doth not declare the evidences of His might, which doth not glorify His holy Name, or is not expressive of the effulgent light of His unity.

… How can I claim to have known Thee, when the entire creation is bewildered by Thy mystery, and how can I confess not to have known Thee, when, lo, the whole universe proclaimeth Thy Presence and testifieth to Thy truth?

(Bahá’u’lláh, Lawh-i-Tawhid -- BH00512)
16

All men, O my God, confess their powerlessness to know Thee as Thou knowest Thine Own Being; the generative impulse Thou hast released is manifest throughout the entire creation, and all created things which Thou hast fashioned are but expressions of Thy wondrous signs.

(The Báb, Sahifiy-i-Makhzunih (Hidden Treasured Epistle), 1260-06 ca. [1844-Jun] -- BB00018)
17

If thou sailest upon the sea of names, know that all are known through God, or are attributed to His servants. Everything thou seest hath been created by His Will. How then can it serve as proof of His unity? His existence itself is proof of His oneness, and the existence of all things is proof that they are His creation.

(The Báb, Dala'il-i-Sab'ih (The Seven Proofs - Persian), to Mulla Ahmad-i-Katib and Hujjat-i-Zanjani -- BB00015)
18

All existence is but a ray of the effulgence of His bounty, and all that hath been or shall be is but a reflection of the shining forth of His grace.

… He hath created all things from nothingness, and hath placed the essence of all things within things, and the essence of a thing within all things, and the essence of all within the Primal Unity, so that all contingent beings might attain unto the summit of His bounteous grace and reach the horizon of His holy glory.

(The Báb, Panj Sha'n (Book of the Five Modes), 1266-04 ca. [1850-Feb] -- BB00005)
19

It is undisputed, however, that the influence of Thine attraction hath everlastingly been inherent in the realities of Thy handiwork, although that which beseemeth the hallowed court of Thy providence is exalted beyond the attainment of the entire creation.

(The Báb, unknown (Maku or Chihriq), to Haji Sulayman Khan -- BB00556)
20

He hath brought into being the Temple of Oneness in the essence of creation that the atoms might give voice to whatsoever their Creator willeth, and He hath deposited the likeness of Unity in every atom of creation.

(The Báb, Khutba written one stage from Medina (Khutbiy-i-Shajariyyih), 1260-12 (after Mecca) [1844-Dec] -- BB00216)
21

Thus it behooveth to be, else they enter not the arena of them that are nigh, and glorify Thee with the angels on high who praise Thee night and day and never cease. Then the veil is not lifted from the countenance of that soul's heart; else, by Thy glory, he would become the most prostrating of them that prostrate when he knoweth Thee, and the most worshipful of them that worship when he findeth Thee. Is he distracted by aught wherein is not Thy love, or by aught that loveth not to prostrate before Thee? Glory be unto Thee! Were this so, that soul would not have prostrated in Adam's religion. Rather, according to his knowledge doth he prostrate before Thee, except that veils have come between Thee and him. Indeed, he hath supposed Thy good-pleasure to lie in his standing still, and worship of Thee in his being veiled. Else, glory be unto Thee and exalted art Thou!

(The Báb, Ziyarat for the first and last to believe, on Friday, 1265 [1848-1849], to Mulla Ahmad Mu'allim -- BB00199)
22

To him "all songs are from that sovereign King" and every melody from Him. He sitteth on the throne of "Say, all things are of God" and reclineth upon the seat of "There is no power nor strength but in God alone." He looketh upon all things with the eye of Unity, and seeth the effulgent rays of the Sun of Truth shining from the dayspring of the Divine Essence upon all created things alike, and beholdeth the lights of Unity reflected upon all creation.

(Bahá’u’lláh, Haft Vadi (The Seven Valleys), to Shaykh Muhiyid-Din Judge of Khaniqayn et al -- BH00047)
23

Upon the inmost reality of each and every created thing He hath shed the light of one of His names, and made it a recipient of the glory of one of His attributes. Upon the reality of man, however, He hath focused the radiance of all of His names and attributes, and made it a mirror of His own Self. Alone of all created things man hath been singled out for so great a favor, so enduring a bounty.

(Bahá’u’lláh, to Sarih Khanum sister of Baha'u'llah -- BH00690)
24

Now, the world of existence, indeed every created thing, proclaims but one of the names of God, but the reality of man is an all-encompassing and universal reality which is the seat of the revelation of all the divine perfections. That is, a sign of each one of the names, attributes and perfections that we ascribe to God exists in man.

(‘Abdu’l-Bahá, Chapter 50, Spiritual Proofs of the Origin of Man, 1904-Oct ca. -- AB00440)
25

Praise be to God Who hath ever caused His Names and Attributes to penetrate the degrees of existence; Who hath made the effects of those Names and Attributes to shine resplendent and their signs to be firmly established in both the hidden and manifest worlds. By them He hath made the Sanctified Realities, they who are the Recipients of the grace of God and the Bearers of glad-tidings, to be the sole Revealers of His Being, and hath caused them to move in the firmament of perfection in descending and ascending arcs. He hath ordained them to be the origin and cause of existence in the world of creation and the source of gradated realities in the degrees of being.

(‘Abdu’l-Bahá, Lawh-i-Aflakiyyih (Tablet of the Celestial Spheres), 1876-08 ca. -- AB00023)
26

The spirit is a divine bounty that has shone upon all created things, and all created things have received a portion and share of that bounty, like the sun which shines upon all earthly creatures, for all existing things on earth are nurtured by the sun's bounty and receive its rays and light. However, this bounty appears in each rank according to the capacity of that rank. The sun's ray has one effect and radiance in mineral bodies, but in transparent bodies it has another manifestation and appearance.

(‘Abdu’l-Bahá, Words spoken on 1911-Nov-02 in Paris -- ABU0179)
27

The light proceedeth from Him and returneth unto Him. These perfections, in the realities of all others, are but borrowed from that Sun of Truth; and each reality, according to its own capacity and worthiness, deriveth illumination from those lights.

(‘Abdu’l-Bahá, to Shaykh Muhammad Ali (Nabil son of Nabil) -- AB04398)
28

The divine bounty is universal. The outpourings of the All-Merciful descend successively upon all created things, yet each being receiveth according to its capacity and ability. … The clouds, for example, pour down rain equally from the sky. In one place it falleth upon fertile soil where seeds are sown, and in another place upon barren salt land. Though the rain hath fallen equally upon both, from one there springeth forth a harvest, while from the other only useless thorns and meaningless weeds.

(‘Abdu’l-Bahá, Words spoken on 1916-Aug-16 in Bahji -- ABU0830)
29

Throughout the universe the divine power is effulgent in endless images and pictures. … In the endless variety of its reflections the divine Will is manifested.

(‘Abdu’l-Bahá, Public address to Advanced Thought Center, Carnegie Lyceum, spoken on 1912-Apr-14 -- ABU0399)
30

But although the reality of Divinity is sanctified beyond the comprehension of its creatures, it has bestowed its bounties upon all kingdoms of the phenomenal world, and evidences of spiritual manifestation are witnessed throughout the realms of contingent existence.

(‘Abdu’l-Bahá, Public address given at Unitarian church on 1912-Jun-09 -- ABU0030)
31

The vegetable plane or kingdom, for instance, has its infinite variety of types and material structures of plant life -- each distinct and different within itself, no two exactly alike in composition and detail -- for there are no repetitions in nature, and the augmentative virtue cannot be confined to any given image or shape. Each leaf has its own particular identity -- so to speak, its own individuality as a leaf. Therefore, each atom of the innumerable elemental atoms, during its ceaseless motion through the kingdoms of existence as a constituent of organic composition, not only becomes imbued with the powers and virtues of the kingdoms it traverses but also reflects the attributes and qualities of the forms and organisms of those kingdoms.

(‘Abdu’l-Bahá, Public address given at Metaphysical Club on 1912-Aug-27 -- ABU0024)
32

When we examine the world and the souls of men, the perspicuous signs of the perfections of the Divinity appear clear and manifest, for the realities of all things attest to the existence of a universal Reality. The reality of the Divinity is even as the sun, which from the heights of its sanctity shines upon every land, and of whose radiance every land and every soul receives a share.

(‘Abdu’l-Bahá, Chapter 59, Man's Comprehension of God, 1904 ca. -- AB00395)
33

Nothing moves except through Thy all-conquering power over all things, and not an atom exists but that it reveals the manifest signs of Thy oneness throughout all regions.

(‘Abdu’l-Bahá, 1903 ca., to Relatives of Ismullah -- AB00978)
34

O new blossom in the rose-garden of divine knowledge! The sign of the manifestation of the Blessed Beauty is deposited and concealed within the reality of all things, and the diffused rays of the Sun of Truth are reflected and visible in the mirrors of all beings.

(‘Abdu’l-Bahá, to Husayn son of Muhammad Ali Kashani -- AB10136)
35

O thou whose eyes are fixed upon the Kingdom of Abha!

When thou ponderest deeply into the realities of things thou wilt see them all emanating from the reflections of God's names and attributes and the signs of the One Who shineth from the Sinai Mount - names and attributes which are entrusted in the realities of things.

(‘Abdu’l-Bahá, to Ghulam Rida Khan -- AB08921)
36

O servant of Baha! The reality of all things proclaims with eloquent tongue "Glory be to my Lord, the Most Glorious!" and the essence of rock and clay and tree cries out "Glory be to my Lord, the Most Exalted!"

(‘Abdu’l-Bahá, to Haji Muhammad Chamgurdani -- AB08573)
37

Every leaf and stone and clod hath testified to the appearance of God and His sovereignty, yet the people deny and perceive not.

(Bahá’u’lláh, 1301-03-09 [1884-Jan-8], to Jinab Ayat -- BH08273)
38

All the phenomena speak with man, explaining to him in an eloquent tongue all the secrets of creation.

(‘Abdu’l-Bahá, Words to Haji Amin and Daniel Jenkyn, spoken on 1912-Dec-29 -- ABU3381)
39

Know thou that the Divine Essence, which is called the Invisible of the Invisibles, never to be described, beyond the reach of mind -- is sanctified above any mention, any definition or hint or allusion, any acclamation or praise. In the sense that It is that It is, the intellect can never grasp It, and the soul seeking knowledge of It is but a wanderer in the desert, and far astray. 'No vision taketh in Him, but He taketh in all vision: He is the Subtile, the All-Informed.'

When, however, thou dost contemplate the innermost essence of all things, and the individuality of each, thou wilt behold the signs of thy Lord's mercy in every created thing, and see the spreading rays of His Names and Attributes throughout all the realm of being, with evidences which none will deny save the froward and the unaware. Then wilt thou observe that the universe is a scroll that discloseth His hidden secrets, which are preserved in the well-guarded Tablet. And not an atom of all the atoms in existence, not a creature from amongst the creatures but speaketh His praise and telleth of His attributes and names, revealeth the glory of His might and guideth to His oneness and His mercy: and none will gainsay this who hath ears to hear, eyes to see, and a mind that is sound.

And whensoever thou dost gaze upon creation all entire, and dost observe the very atoms thereof, thou wilt note that the rays of the Sun of Truth are shed upon all things and shining within them, and telling of that Day-Star's splendours, Its mysteries, and the spreading of Its lights. Look thou upon the trees, upon the blossoms and fruits, even upon the stones. Here too wilt thou behold the Sun's rays shed upon them, clearly visible within them, and manifested by them.

Shouldst thou, however, turn thy gaze unto a Mirror, brilliant, stainless, and pure, wherein the divine Beauty is reflected, therein wilt thou find the Sun shining with Its rays, Its heat, Its disc, Its fair form all entire. For each separate entity possesseth its allotted portion of the solar light and telleth of the Sun, but that Universal Reality in all Its splendour, that stainless Mirror Whose qualities are appropriate to the qualities of the Sun revealed within It -- expresseth in their entirety the attributes of the Source of Glory. And that Universal Reality is Man, the divine Being, the Essence that abideth forever. 'Say, Call upon God, or call upon the All-Merciful; whichsoever ye call upon, most beauteous are His Names.'

This is the meaning of the Messiah's words, that the Father is in the Son. Dost thou not see that should a stainless mirror proclaim, 'Verily is the sun ashine within me, together with all its qualities, tokens and signs', such an utterance by such a mirror would be neither deceptive nor false? No, by the One Who created It, shaped It, fashioned It, and made It to be an entity conformable to the attributes of the glory within It! Praised be He Who created It! Praised be He Who fashioned It! Praised be He Who made It manifest!

Such were the words uttered by Christ. On account of these words they cavilled at and assailed Him when He said unto them, 'Verily the Son is in the Father, and the Father is in the Son.' Be thou informed of this, and learn thou the secrets of thy Lord. As for the deniers, they are veiled from God: they see not, they hear not, neither do they understand. 'Leave them to entertain themselves with their cavillings.' Abandon them to their wanderings along river beds where no stream flows. Like grazing beasts they cannot tell paste from pearl. Are they not shut away from the mysteries of thy Lord, the Clement, the Merciful?

(‘Abdu’l-Bahá, 1908-Dec or <, to Howard Macnutt -- AB00083)
40

All within the kingdom of the heavens and earth and whatsoever is between them glorify Thee, the kingdoms of command and creation and whatsoever is beneath them praise Thee, all things testify to Thy oneness through their very being, all things magnify Thee through their essence, and all from the heights to the lowest atom exalt Thee through their reality.

(The Báb, Li-Jinabi Aqa Muhammad Hasan, unknown (Maku or Chihriq), to Aqa Muhammad Hasan -- BB00434)
41

O my God! Thou hast placed in all things a sign of Thy love.

(The Báb, Chihriq? -- BB00283)
42

Verily, We behold all created things moved to bear witness unto Us. Some know Us and bear witness, while the majority bear witness, yet know Us not.

(Bahá’u’lláh, Lawh-i-Aqdas (Tablet to the Christians), to Faris-i-Suri the priest -- BH00505)
43

Thou seest, then, O Thou Who art the Beloved of the world and the Revealer of the Most Great Name, how He hath come down with the kingdom of His signs, and in a manner that hath caused the atoms of the earth to testify that the whole world hath been filled with these signs.

(Bahá’u’lláh, to Aqa Buzurg -- BH00208)
44

The true believer in divine unity is one who sees all things as manifestations of God's primal sign, and beholds in all things the expressions of His names and attributes, while seeing that sign as sanctified above all things and sovereign over all things - how much more so the Truth Himself, exalted is He above being associated with His creation or known through aught else.

(Bahá’u’lláh, 1290 [1873] or earlier, to Muhammad Ismail Buranjani -- BH01972)
45

Every single thing among all things is a door leading to His knowledge, a sign of His sovereignty, a revelation of His names, a testimony to His majesty and power, and a path unto His straight way.

(Bahá’u’lláh, 1299-07-12 [1882-May-30], to Mulla Muhammad Ali -- BH00328)
46

He is manifest in all and yet sanctified above all. This is the essence of unity - that ye should behold the True One alone as all-prevailing over all things and manifest in the mirrors of all created things.

(Bahá’u’lláh -- BH00586)
47

The Fifth Treasure: When the Ancient Beauty opened the gate of joy and glad-tidings to the face of the people of creation, He spoke this supreme word: "I have come to this world to extract essences. If there exists an atom of essence in a stone behind the seven seas, I will not cease until I have extracted that essence from it."

(Bahá’u’lláh, Panj Kanz (The Five Treasures), to recollections of Nabil-i-A'zam -- BHU0001)
48

All the atoms of the earth bear witness, O my Lord, to the greatness of Thy power and of Thy sovereignty; and all the signs of the universe attest the glory of Thy majesty and of Thy might.

(Bahá’u’lláh, 1296 ? [1878-1879] -- BH02806)
49

The horizon of the world hath been illumined by the Most Great Light, and all things have proclaimed: "The Sovereign hath come!

(Bahá’u’lláh, 1307 ? [1889-1890], to Mirza Aqa Bashir Ilahi (Bashirus-Sultan) -- BH11419)
50

Today all atoms proclaim "The Sovereign hath come!" and all the Concourse on High give glad tidings to the people of creation that "Thy Lord hath come, and on that day sovereignty belongeth unto God."

(Bahá’u’lláh, 1296 ? [1878-1879], to Ibn Asdaq (Hand of the Cause) -- BH00872)
51

Sanctified be the Lord of all mankind, at the mention of Whose name all the atoms of the earth have been made to vibrate, and the Tongue of Grandeur hath been moved to disclose that which had been wrapt in His knowledge and lay concealed within the treasury of His might.

(Bahá’u’lláh, Lawh-i-Karmil (Tablet of Carmel), 1306 ? [1888-1889] -- BH02324)
52

O thou who seekest My traces! Know thou that My traces encompass the heavens and the earth, and in every station My traces are found, if thou be of them that know. Verily, the heaven is the trace of My exaltation and the earth the trace of My tranquility, and the Hour whose calamity hath seized the servants is the trace of My power that dominateth the worlds. The clouds are the trace of My movement and the winds are sent forth by My Word, and the signs appear by My wondrous command.

(Bahá’u’lláh, 1290 [1873] or earlier, to He Who Asked God -- BH02361)
53

In this luminous century, if you observe carefully, the atoms of creation are in motion and movement, and the realities of all things are in vibration and gladness, yet they are unaware of the Mover and Creator. A wondrous melody reaches the ear of the soul and conscience of all, yet they know not the Singer.

(‘Abdu’l-Bahá, 1911-Aug-11, to Baha'is of the world -- AB01569)
54

O Ali! Today the Tongue of God speaks in all things, yet no hearing ear is to be found that might perceive it. The signs of God are manifest in all things, yet no seeing eye is found that might behold them.

(Bahá’u’lláh, 1290 [1873] or earlier, to Ali Nur in Isfahan -- BH03467)
55

May they break all bonds of limitation, so that they can observe from the height the lordly processions of infinite creatures; they will see the blue heavens studded with luminous stars, rivers flowing with salubrious water, gardens bedecked with fragrant flowers, trees adorned with blossoms and fruits, birds singing songs of light, humanity ever striving forward, every atom of existence breathing life and force - the universe of God a wonderful theatre upon the stage of which every created thing plays its part.

(‘Abdu’l-Bahá -- ABU1290)
56

God is the source of all things that are made, and all things that are, are mirrors reflecting His Glory.

(‘Abdu’l-Bahá, Words spoken ca. 1900 -- ABU2080)
57

as we can only see different objects by the light of the sun, one might in one sense and with truth say the aim is in everything. In this sense also is our Lord Christ in everything. As all things are nourished and sustained by the light and warmth of the sun, so are all created beings filled with the overflowing bounty of Christ.

(‘Abdu’l-Bahá, Words to E.J. Rosenberg et al, spoken around Feb. 1901 -- ABU3187)

Notwithstanding the fact that the Reality of Divinity has become effulgent or resplendent in all phenomena, not a single phenomenon amongst phenomena has been bereft of the bounty of God. All phenomena are submerged in the sea of God's eternal bestowals.

(‘Abdu’l-Bahá, Words spoken at a high school auditorium in Berkeley, 1912-Oct-09 -- ABU0022)
59

Were you to observe with the eye of the All-Merciful, you would witness all the atoms of existence in joy and vibration from this perfect bounty and all-encompassing grace.

(‘Abdu’l-Bahá -- AB04463)
60

I perceive that Thou hast made all things to be the manifestations of Thy behest, and the revelations of Thy handiwork, and the repositories of Thy knowledge, and the treasuries of Thy wisdom.

… I yield Thee such thanks as can make every created thing to be a book that shall speak of Thee, and a scroll that shall unfold Thy praise.

(Bahá’u’lláh, to Firaydun et al -- BH00296)
61

O friends of the Lord God! In this Most Great Cycle when the Pre-existent Sun has risen and shone forth from the horizons of the nations, and through Its infinite bounties has illumined the East and West of contingent being, and through the breezes from the gardens of the Kingdom has bestowed the spirit of life upon all directions, and with the sweet fragrance of the flowers of the meadows of inner meanings has perfumed the nostrils of the people of understanding - He has brought about a resurrection and raised high the banner of protection, He has established the true Balance and extended the Straight Path, He has spread out the land of gathering and made manifest the assembling and dispersing.

The waves of the angels of the Concourse on High have arrived successively like billows, and the hosts of the Supreme Assembly have appeared consecutively like flights of birds in the manifest horizon. He has laid the foundation of the new Cycle in this glorious Age and established a mighty edifice in this wondrous and enduring world. He has opened the gates of the Kingdom and shown the way of salvation and life. He has adorned the rose-garden of infinite bounty and embellished the gathering of divine manifestation. He has opened wide the hand of bestowal and shown forth the white hand [of Moses]. He has invited all to the outstretched feasts and called everyone to the spread table of bounty. He has given every atom the capacity to receive divine grace and bestowed upon every drop the surge and swell of vast oceans of favor - so that all may unite and, taking refuge in the divine Covenant under the shade of one Word, arise with the utmost power and might to exalt the Word of God and engage in diffusing the divine fragrances, and sacrifice our lives in His path and strive with heart and soul and surge and seethe until the holy fragrances perfume the world and the raptures of holiness conquer the hearts and minds of the nations; until the divine fire blazes forth at the pole of contingent being and the flame of the Mount burns up the heart of existence; until the life-giving breezes make the trees of being green and verdant and the soul-stirring melodies of the celestial psalms bring delight to the ears of the Concourse on High.

Now hearts are still and souls are silent and faces are veiled and breasts are unopened. These are signs of faithlessness, not qualities of faithfulness; marks of lethargy, not glad-tidings of the All-Loving Lord.

Therefore, O friends of God, come, let us raise our heads from the ancient pillow and brighten our eyes with the manifest light and arise as we ought and should to fulfill our pledge, and sacrifice our lives in this path and burn and be content - until the horizon of the world becomes illumined and the furnace of the world becomes a rose garden and the signs of the Most Great Name become established at the pole of the world.

(‘Abdu’l-Bahá, 1900 or <, to Ibn-i Dakhil Mulla Husayn (Maraghih) et al -- AB01123)
62

I beseech Thee by the Word through which, when it was raised up in the world, all things spoke and the earth and heaven were stirred, to make me steadfast among Thy servants in service to Thy loved ones who have traversed the lands to propagate Thy Cause and to kindle hearts with the fire of Thy divine Tree.

(Bahá’u’lláh, 1305 ? [1887-1888] -- BH03470)
63

How wonderful is this supreme honor and greatest glory that hath caused all the atoms of contingent beings, from the most exalted summit to the lowest point, to rejoice and hath given them to drink of the wine of radiance and the sweet crystal water, so that all created things and all that is mentioned may inscribe with the Pen of bounty upon the Tablet of thought: "Verily He is the Truth, there is no God but Him, and He is God, the Witness over all things."

(Bahá’u’lláh, to Haji Muhammad Nasir -- BH10241)
64

All things - fruits, trees, leaves and flowers - are singing melodies and are occupied with the praise and glorification of God.

(Bahá’u’lláh, 1304-10 [1887-Jun], to Ustad Hasan -- BH06421)
65

Every atom proclaimeth and giveth glad tidings

[...] but riches and hopes have deprived the servants from the All-Possessing, the Self-Subsisting, and from the outpourings of this wondrous Day.

(Bahá’u’lláh, 1304-04-07 [1887-Jan-3], to Amatu'llah dal' Mirza 'Ali Rida Khan -- BH09716)

66

Remove the veil from mine eyes, O my Lord, that I may recognize what Thou hast desired for Thy creatures, and discover, in all the manifestations of Thy handiwork, the revelations of Thine almighty power.

(Bahá’u’lláh, 1290 [1873] or earlier -- BH05771)
67

This is the hour when Thou hast unlocked the doors of Thy bounty before the faces of Thy creatures, and opened wide the portals of Thy tender mercy unto all the dwellers of Thine earth. I beseech Thee, by all them whose blood was shed in Thy path, who, in their yearning over Thee, rid themselves from all attachment to any of Thy creatures, and who were so carried away by the sweet savors of Thine inspiration that every single member of their bodies intoned Thy praise and vibrated to Thy remembrance, not to withhold from us the things Thou hast irrevocably ordained in this Revelation -- a Revelation the potency of which hath caused every tree to cry out what the Burning Bush had aforetime proclaimed unto Moses, Who conversed with Thee, a Revelation that hath enabled every least pebble to resound again with Thy praise, as the stones glorified Thee in the days of Muhammad, Thy Friend.

(Bahá’u’lláh -- BH01888)
68

Hold Thou me with the hands of Thy power, and grant that I may be so carried away by the sweet melodies of the Dove of Thy oneness, that I will cease to regard in all creation any face except Thy face, O Thou the Goal of my desire, and will recognize in the visible world naught else save the evidences of Thy might, O Thou Who art the God of mercy!

(Bahá’u’lláh, ca. 1289-1290? -- BH04744)
69

My God, my God! Every seeing one beareth witness to Thy greatness and power, and every hearing one to Thy might and strength and authority. Thou art He Who, O God of Names and Creator of heaven, hath deposited within all things among created things the traces of Thy handiwork and the manifestations of Thy grace and loving-kindness.

(Bahá’u’lláh, 1305 [1887-1888] -- BH03060)
70

His light encompasseth the heavens and earth, and there is nothing but is illumined by it.

(Bahá’u’lláh, to Khadijih Baygum wife of the Bab -- BH02670)
71

All the atoms of the earth have celebrated Thy praise, and all created things have been set ablaze with the drops sprinkled by the ocean of Thy love, and yet the people still seek to quench Thy fire.

(Bahá’u’lláh, ca. 1289-1290? -- BH02597)
72

I implore Thee by Thy Name that hath caused to surge within every drop the oceans of Thy loving-kindness and mercy, and to shine within every atom the luminaries of Thy bountiful blessings and favors, -- I implore Thee to adorn every soul with the ornament of Thy love, that none may remain on Thine earth who hath not turned towards Thee, or hath failed to detach himself from all except Thy Self.

(Bahá’u’lláh, 1290 [1873] or earlier, to Aqa Muhammad Hasan -- BH06188)
73

Our spiritual perception our inward sight must be opened, so that we can see the signs and traces of God's Spirit in everything. Everything can speak to us of God - everything can reflect to us the light of the Spirit.

When we look at people, we must look at them for the spirit that is in them; we must see them in their relation to God - they are His creatures and belong to Him.

(‘Abdu’l-Bahá, Words to Ethel Rosenberg and Laura Clifford Barney, spoken on 1904-May-23 -- ABU0322)
