Living waters: thirst, renewal, and a spring within

living waters; water of life

Editorial introduction

The Euphrates runs clear in full view, ‘Abdu’l-Bahá observes, and the thirsty are nowhere to be found. Living water is first of all a question about thirst: not whether the gift is offered, since Bahá’u’lláh describes a river of life flowing from His Pen to all created things, but whether anyone has the capacity to want it. The thirsty one must run after the water; the fountain will not run after the thirsty. Once tasted, the image multiplies. Water is the manifestation of the All-Merciful upon creation, the meanings hidden in revealed words, the mercy that forgives, the recognition that turns a mirage into a spring, and sometimes, disconcertingly, it is fire or light as well, as if to forbid any merely material reading. Jesus at Jacob’s well promises the Samaritan woman a water that becomes an inward spring, and the Bahá’í writings press that promise toward its consequence: whoever drinks must give others to drink, through a whole lifetime [1]. The way continues toward becoming a source of living waters for others, toward the paired symbols of fire and water, and toward the recognition of God that marks the beginning of new life.

I am, O my God, but a tiny seed which Thou hast sown in the soil of Thy love, and caused to spring forth by the hand of Thy bounty. Send down upon it, from the heaven of Thy loving-kindness, that which will enable it to flourish beneath Thy shadow and within the borders of Thy court.

O maid-servant of God! Many a spiritual woman came (into the world) and passed away in vain; no sound is heard of them and no trace of them is seen; inasmuch as their spirits were not dependent upon the Holy Spirit, nor were they attracted to the fragrances of Truth; nor were they ever baptized by the Water of Life, nor by the Spirit of Truth which speaketh in the assemblies of the Kingdom and which breathes upon spirits the breezes which waft an eternal glory, the signs of which are everlasting.

Questions to carry forward

  1. What might spiritual thirst mean, and how do the passages distinguish readiness to receive from merely being near a source?
  2. Which meanings of living water emerge through love, mercy, recognition, prayer, and revealed words, and how do those meanings enrich one another?
  3. What changes when water also appears as fire, light, wine, or a voice, and how might these shifting images guide a reading of symbolic language?
  4. How do the contrasts between life and death, spring and mirage, or clear and stagnant water invite examination of one’s own response?
  5. How does Jesus’ conversation with the Samaritan woman illuminate the relation between receiving living water and becoming a spring, while retaining its particular account of revelation and worship?
  6. What would it mean to offer freely what has renewed one’s life, and how could a person or community become a dependable source of refreshment over time?
