Editorial introduction

To ask God for eyes that see is already to confess that one has been looking with borrowed sight. Bahá’u’lláh teaches that the divine Essence lies forever beyond the reach of the mind, and yet He calls each soul to gaze upon the signs of revelation with its own eyes and not with the eyes of others, as a Psalmist once asked for opened eyes and found the request bound up with obedience and longing [1]. The prayer for recognition therefore begins in humility, in admitting ignorance and asking to be made knowing, much as the Prophet was told to receive patiently before asking to grow in knowledge [2]. ‘Abdu’l-Bahá speaks of veils that must be burned away, of hearts purified, of a love whose fire outlasts separation and prison, and of a thankfulness that recognises even the capacity to respond as a gift. Such praying cannot stay inward. It learns to give up certainty about its own benefit and to turn toward mercy and forgiveness, as Jesus taught in the prayer He gave His disciples [3], until it reaches outward in prayer for the spiritual progress of others and in the daily practices of service. From here the way leads on into the knowledge and recognition of God, and into the wider life of prayer itself.

71

O my Lord! I am a sinner, and Thou art the Forgiver. I am intoxicated with the wine of heedlessness; grant me awareness. I am occupied with the mention of this sorrowful world; bestow upon me an ear that may hear the melody of the Concourse on High, hearken to the song of the nightingale of Thy sacred gardens, and perceive the notes of the thankful birds with an attentive ear. O Lord! Remove the veil from mine eyes that I may witness Thy greatest signs and observe the subtle mysteries of Thy supreme glory. Grant life to my heart, and bestow upon my soul a spirit and sweet fragrance worthy of this mighty century and befitting this glorious age. And upon thee be glory.

O Thou kind God! To me Thou art kinder than myself, and Thy love is more abundant and more ancient. Whenever I am reminded of Thy bestowals I am made happy and hopeful. O Thou Lord of the Kingdom! Cause Thou the rejoicing of my heart; empower my weak spirit and strengthen my exhausted nerves. Illumine Thou my eyes: suffer my ears to become hearing, so that I may hearken to the music of the Kingdom and attain to the joy and happiness everlasting. Verily, Thou art the Generous, the Giver, and the Kind!

In the station of communion and supplication with the Self-Sufficient, the Most High, speak these words: "O my Beloved, my Purpose, and the Ultimate Goal of my desires! You behold this evanescent servant who has turned to You and sought from You the eternal water. Grant that which befits Your greatness and is worthy of Your days. "O Thou kind Lord! We are servants of Thy Threshold, taking shelter at Thy holy Door. We seek no refuge save only this strong pillar, turn nowhere for a haven but unto Thy safekeeping. Protect us, bless us, support us, make us such that we shall love but Thy good pleasure, utter only Thy praise, follow only the pathway of truth, that we may become rich enough to dispense with all save Thee, and receive our gifts from the sea of Thy beneficence, that we may ever strive to exalt Thy Cause and to spread Thy sweet savours far and wide, that we may become oblivious of self and occupied only with Thee, and disown all else and be caught up in Thee.
