Editorial introduction

The Báb asks whether anyone but God can remove a difficulty, and the question answers itself before it is finished. To pray for protection is first to admit that something precious can be harmed: a child, a family fleeing a burning town, a heart that could slip into censure or pride. Bahá’u’lláh and ‘Abdu’l-Bahá ask for armour against enemies and just as urgently for armour against the self, and they plead fiercely for the oppressed while forgiving the oppressor and forbidding any retaliation. The shelter they describe is not immunity. Prisoners pray for it, the bereaved pray for it, and the same hands that lift the petition are told to watch a travelling bag, help nearly sixty people to safety and guard their tongues. Refuge, it turns out, is something a person is meant to become for others. From here the path leads into the wider life of prayer, where petition rests inside praise, remembrance and service, and into the da’iras and haykals, protective tablets whose forms carry a history of their own.

(‘Abdu’l-Bahá, 1903 ca., to Baha'is of Iran -- AB00129)
75

O my Beloved! Thy most vehement enemies and antagonistic foes have assailed Thy helpless servant from every ambush where they lay in wait. They have descended upon me from every height, attacking like wolves and pouncing like dogs, fearing not the Day of Retribution. The clouds weep for Thy lowly servant, the doves lament, and the nightingales in the hearts of the loved ones cry out in anguish.

(‘Abdu’l-Bahá, 1898 or <, to Mahmud Furughi -- AB00157)
76

I beseech Thee, therefore, O my God, by the fire of Thy Essence which cannot be quenched and by the light of Thine eternity which shall never fade, to make me a fortress for Thy servants and a barrier against the Gog of Thy creation, lest they transgress the bounds which Thou hast ordained from Thy presence for the people of Thy earth and Thy heaven.

(Bahá’u’lláh -- BH07163)
77

Preserve us, then, by Thy Most Great Name, Which Thou didst cause to overshadow such nations as lay claim to what Thou hast forbidden in Thy Book.

(Bahá’u’lláh, ca. 1289-1290? -- BH01969)
78

In the name of God, the Sanctified, the Mighty, the Beautiful!

Glory be unto Thee, O my God! In this moment I confess and acknowledge my powerlessness to know Thy supreme Self in Thy Most Exalted Name, and my incapacity to comprehend Thy Essence, O Thou in Whose grasp lie the kingdoms of names. For the loftiest hearts of them that are nigh unto Thee, and the highest understanding of them that are devoted to Thy unity, are bound by Thy will, held within Thy grasp, and created by Thy command. How then can the created soar in the atmosphere of nearness to the Essence, or attain unto the Lord of earth and heaven?

Glory be unto Thee! Glory be unto Thee! O my God, I testify in this my station before Thee that the most eloquent have not reached the court of Thy singular glory, and the most learned have not comprehended the wonders of Thy knowledge and understanding. All who are enamoured cry out in the wilderness of separation, yearning for Thy nearness, and all who are longing call forth in the Sinai of longing, seeking reunion with Thee. Some have attained the ultimate of what they sought of the gems of Thy mercy and the essence of Thy bounty, while others have perished in their exile and separation from Thee, never finding the path to Thy nearness and meeting with Thee.

Glory be unto Thee! Glory be unto Thee! Whenever I consider my self and my deeds in Thy kingdom, bewilderment and sorrow seize me to such degree that I become despairing of the sweet fragrances of Thy glorious mercy and deprived of the glances of Thine eye of grace. Yet whenever I turn, O my God, to the wonders of Thy mercy and the gems of Thy bounty, the breezes of assurance waft upon me from the direction of grace and loving-kindness.

Glorified art Thou, O my God, my Beloved, my Lord and my Support! Beseemeth it One like Thee to deprive him who hath placed his whole trust in Thee, who hath detached himself from all in the heavens and the earth, and who hath taken refuge in the sovereignty of Thy grace? By Thy glory, O my Beloved! Even shouldst Thou give me all that Thou hast created and shalt create, and make me sovereign over all who dwell in the kingdom of Thy Cause and creation, and seat me upon the throne of grandeur and power and the seat of loftiness and independence, yet deny me the sweet fragrances of Thy mercy and the breezes of Thy bounty for less than a moment - by Thy glory, my soul would not be content, my heart would not find peace, and my spirit would find no rest.

Glory be unto Thee! Glory be unto Thee, O my God! Glory be unto Thee! Glory be unto Thee, O my Beloved! How exalted are the stations of Thy sovereign glory, and how abject are the ranks of Thy servant's lowliness in his love for Thee! How resplendent are the manifestations of Thy wealth, and how evident are the expressions of poverty in Thy servant! By Thy beauty, O my God, my abasement and poverty, then my distress and desperation have reached such a state that abasement itself flees from my abasement, and the very essence of adversity takes flight from my adversity.

Hast Thou decreed, O my God, that the glances of Thine eye of mercy shall never again turn to Thy glory? Hast Thou inscribed, O my Beloved, upon the tablet of Thy preservation that Thou wilt not send upon Thy servant the holy winds of Thy grace? Then would weeping itself weep at my weeping, and the secret of fire would burn from my burning. I know not, O my God, in what thing I might find joy in Thy dominion, or by what matter I might find solace in Thy realm, after my shirt has been stained with my blood through what hath befallen me from the swords of hatred and rancor, and my heart has been pierced by the spears of the people of tyranny and wickedness. They have been made happy by Thy irrevocable decree and Thy destined destiny. Yet with all this, O my Most Exalted God and my Most Glorious Beauty, I have nothing wherewith to occupy myself, or find solace in, or trust in, such that I find myself stripped of every praiseworthy attribute and devoid of every acceptable quality.

O my God! Thou hast not given me a pen wherewith I might write the verses of Thy glorious oneness, nor knowledge whereby I might ascend to the sublime heaven of Thy unity, nor wisdom through which I might soar to the holy precincts of Thy singleness, nor certitude by which I might travel through the realms of Thy divine dominion. I have no heart to comprehend the wonders of the signs of Thy sovereignty, no wings to fly in the atmosphere of Thy oneness, no power to enumerate the manifestations of Thy craftsmanship in the horizons of Thy knowledge and the souls of Thy wisdom, no strength to raise the banners of Thy triumph and victory, no eye to witness the radiance of the lights of Thy beauty, no tongue to mention Thee in the paradise of Thy exaltation, no sense of smell to inhale the fragrance of the garment from the Joseph of Thy mercy, no ear to hear the melodies of the dove of Thy rapture and longing, no hand to grasp the scrolls of Thy unity, and no foot to hasten to the shore of the ocean of Thy nearness and reunion.

Therefore, O my God, what wilt Thou do with this poor one who hath confessed all this against himself, and who, despite this utter destitution, hath arisen before the gate of the city of Thy supreme mercy and arrived at the pavilions of Thy mighty grace? Wilt Thou, O my God, turn him away from Thy gate, from which Thou hast never turned away anyone throughout all eternity? Nay, by Thy glory! Thou wilt not disappoint him of the garment of Thy grace, nor wilt Thou deprive him of the sanctuary of Thy reunion and the shelter of Thy mercy, unless he should seek from Thee aught except Thyself - and this can never be, for Thou wert when naught existed with Thee, and Thou wilt ever be as Thou hast been. There is none other God but Thee, the Mighty, the Beautiful.

Glory be unto Thee, O my God! I beseech Thee by Thy Name through which Thou didst bring the contingent beings into existence and didst manifest all created things, and through which Thou didst rend asunder the veils from the face of all who are in the heavens and on earth, that Thou mayest cause this poor one and these poor ones who have emigrated with him to enter the city of Thy riches within the pavilion of Thy glory and might. Then assist us with the wonders of Thy help, clothe us in the garment of Thy love, and deprive us not, O my God, of what lieth with Thee - and nothing lieth with Thee save Thyself - and my hope is in none save Thee. There is none other God but Thee, the Mighty, the Generous.

(Bahá’u’lláh, 1290 [1873] or earlier, to Muhammad Hasan Bulurfurush Ahdiyyih -- BH01072)
79

Send down, therefore, O my Lord, upon me and upon my loved ones that which will protect us from the mischief of those that have repudiated Thy truth and disbelieved in Thy signs.

(Bahá’u’lláh, 1290 [1873] or earlier, to Rida who has sought shelter in the House -- BH07113)
80

When thou hearest the cooing of the Dove of My utterance upon the branches of the Tree of My knowledge, say: "My God, my God! I testify to Thy oneness and Thy singleness, and that Thou hast no partner in Thy dominion nor any equal in Thy kingdom. I beseech Thee by the waves of the ocean of Thy power and the effulgences of the lights of the Sun of Thy oneness to protect me from the evil of Thine enemies and to draw me nigh unto Thee.

(Bahá’u’lláh, 1304-10-14 [1887-Jul-6], to Abu'l-Qasim Saatsaz Shirazi -- BH04436)
81

Separate me from them, O Thou in Whose hand is the dominion of command and creation and the kingdom of the heavens and earth. Thou doest what Thou willest through Thy power and ordainest what Thou desirest through Thy Will.

(Bahá’u’lláh, to Husayn Qabl-i-Ali et al -- BH00160)
82

O my Lord! Pour forth upon me patience and grant me victory over the transgressing people.

… O Lord! Pour forth upon me patience and grant me victory over the idolatrous people who speak naught but their own vain imaginings and are moved only by their own desires.

(Bahá’u’lláh, Lawh-i-Kullu't-Ta'am (the Tablet of All Food), to Haji Mirza Kamalid-Din Naraqi -- BH00267)
83

I ask Thee then, O my God, by the lights of Thy divine unity, and the hidden mysteries of Thine ancient and everlasting Being, to preserve Thy loved ones after I am gone, lest their feet should slip upon Thy path. Gather them then together upon the shore of Thy munificence and bounty, and sever them from all but Thee so that they may stand in fear of no one, nor be overawed by any soul.

(Bahá’u’lláh, Lawh-i-Firayjat, to Jim et al -- BH02467)
84

I beseech Thee, O Thou Who art the Lord of all names, to guard Thy loved ones against Thine enemies, and to strengthen them in their love for Thee and in fulfilling Thy pleasure. Do Thou protect them, that their footsteps may slip not, that their hearts may not be shut out as by a veil from Thee, and that their eyes may be restrained from beholding anything that is not of Thee.

(Bahá’u’lláh, 1290 [1873] or earlier, to Muhammad Husayn -- BH03361)
85

O Lord, Thou seest the believers among the idolaters, and what hath befallen them at the hands of the oppressors among Thy creation and the transgressors among Thy servants. I beseech Thee to preserve them through the hosts of Thy power and the legions of Thy might, then ordain for them what beseemeth the heaven of Thy generosity and the ocean of Thy mercy and the sun of Thy bounty.

(Bahá’u’lláh, 1304-04-25 [1887-Jan-21], to Abbas Quli Mirza -- BH04260)
86

O Lord! Thou seest them turning away from the Known and advancing toward the imagined. O Lord! Deliver them through the arms of Thy power from the seas of idle fancies and vain imaginings, then grant them Thy sealed wine, whose seal was broken by Thy Self-Subsisting Name. O Lord! Withhold not Thy servants from the lights of Thy countenance, and deprive them not of the ocean of Thy bestowal.

(Bahá’u’lláh, 1298-12-09 [1881-Nov-2], to Aqa Mirza Asadullah et al -- BH00176)
87

Thou seest Thy loved ones in the hands of the oppressors, and in every moment there befalleth them that which causeth faces to change and beings to be set ablaze. I beseech Thee, O Source of Bounty, by Thy Name through which Thou made the sweet waters of Thy mercy to flow among Thy servants, and by Thy Command whereby the trumpet was blown and they that lay in their graves arose, to aid Thy loved ones to remember and praise Thee, and to protect them from the evil of Thy creatures.

(Bahá’u’lláh, 1305-06-03 [1888-Feb-16], to Aqa Siyyid Murtida et al -- BH00256)

89

I beseech Thee, O my God, by Thy Name through which Thou didst adorn the kingdom of names and didst open the door of Thy grace to all who are in earth and heaven, that Thou change agitation to tranquility, and weakness to strength, and despair to hope.

(Bahá’u’lláh, 1306-11-26 [1889-Jul-24], to Haji Abd al-Husayn ibn Haji Mulla Husayn -- BH05191)
90

We beseech the Exalted Truth to preserve at all times that leaf of the Tree of the All-Merciful from the evil of the envious and the oppressors, to gladden it with the remembrance of the Beloved of the worlds, and to vouchsafe unto it the bounty of reunion.

91

Though tribulation in Thy path is as honey to the lovers and as light to the people of the Covenant, I beseech Thee, O Deliverer of Moses and Supporter of Abraham, to protect him with the hosts of the unseen and deliver him from those who cast Thy Cause behind their backs and were heedless of Thy remembrance.

Despite all this, I stand before all faces and speak as We spoke before, giving glad tidings to all of My manifestation, My appearance and My establishment upon the throne - a command from the presence of One mighty and powerful.

O loved ones of God! Be not grieved by the clamor of the heedless ones. The wolf desired to extinguish the light of God by his howling, but God preserveth His Cause through His sovereignty and exalteth it through His power. Verily He is powerful over whatsoever He willeth through His mighty and wondrous Word.

And We make mention of him who penned his letter which was named Javad, and We ask God to assist him and His loved ones to make mention of Him, to praise Him, and to set down His verses and words. Verily He seeth the deeds of the doers and heareth the call of those who love Him and are sincere. The Glory shining from the horizon of the heaven of My mercy be upon them and upon those whom the oppression of the oppressors hath not prevented from God, the Lord of the worlds.

My God, my God! Thou seest the Wronged One making mention of Thy loved ones and acquainting them with that which draweth them nigh unto the court of Thy glory. I beseech Thee by the ocean of Thy power and the heaven of Thy bounty to aid them to be steadfast in Thy love and to illumine their hearts with the lights of Thy knowledge. Then protect them from the evil of Thine enemies who have disbelieved in Thee and Thy signs, and who have committed that which hath caused the dwellers of the cities of Thy glory and the dawning-places of Thy revelation and the daysprings of Thy inspiration and the manifestations of Thy Self to lament. There is no God but Thee, the Powerful over whatsoever Thou willest through Thy word "Be" and it is.

(Bahá’u’lláh, 1306 ? [1888-1889], to Bahais Of Dahaj -- BH02715)

Questions to carry forward

  1. What does protection mean across these readings: rescue from danger, steadiness within it, preservation of faith, freedom from harmful impulses, or something further? Which passages complicate your first understanding?
  2. How do accounts of imprisonment, bereavement and displacement affect your reading of the prayers’ confidence? What difference do the identity of the speaker and the circumstances of a particular letter make?
  3. What practical responsibilities accompany prayer here, from sheltering people and caring for children to watching possessions and using wisdom in speech? Where might asking for protection lead someone to become a source of safety for others?
  4. How can the collection’s fierce appeals for divine judgment be read beside forgiveness, nonretaliation and the hope that persecutors will change? What distinctions between lament, justice and human action seem necessary?
  5. Compare Psalm 91 and Qur’an 113–114 with these prayers: how do shelter, light, remembrance and inward vigilance shape a response to fear? Where do the similarities illuminate a passage, and where do the traditions retain different emphases?
  6. Which request in this collection could become a concrete practice of care, restraint or service? How might further reading in the connected subjects on prayers generally and on da’iras and haykals deepen your questions about devotion, protective forms and the life those forms seek to sustain?
