Editorial introduction

Console the anguished mothers, ‘Abdu’l-Bahá prays; hasten to the cry of the orphans; stay this mighty flood. Peace in these prayers has a face before it has a theory. In the dark of night He names fires kindled in valley and plain and spreading to the depths of the sea and the heights of the air, beasts trembling in their dens, suckling infants and the humble elderly and even the grazing animals in need of mercy, and then He asks something harder: that the bloodthirsty factions themselves abhor savagery and become merciful, that thoughts of hatred be turned into thoughts of love. The petition circles back on the one praying, who is to become a servant and promoter of peace, a practitioner of justice, a purifier of the heart from rancour. The Buddhist discourse on loving-kindness, extending goodwill to all beings without exclusion and asking that the recollection be kept through the day [1], widens the circle in a kindred way from a different form of address. The journey leads on to universal peace, to world unity, and to the life of prayer from which such care is drawn.

O Lord! Come to the aid of the helpless. O Pure God! Have mercy on these orphaned children. O Self-Sufficient Lord! Stay this mighty flood. O Creator of all peoples! Extinguish this blazing fire. O Succorer! Hasten to the cry of the orphans. O True Judge! Console the anguished mothers. O All-Merciful and Compassionate One! Have mercy on the weeping eyes and burning hearts of fathers. Still this tempest and transform this world-consuming war into peace and reconciliation.

(‘Abdu’l-Bahá, 1914-Oct-01, to London Times -- AB00172)
02

Thou seest me, O my God, on this lofty mountain and this exalted and impregnable spot, the shelter of every great man and the refuge of every noble and distinguished one. To it repaired in ancient times the youths whose hearts were set ablaze with the fire of the love of God. It was the abode of the Prophets, the sanctuary of Elijah, the retreat of Isaiah, and was traversed by the Spirit of God, Jesus Christ, upon Him be greetings and praise. It was the place whereon the feet of the Lord of Hosts trod in the Most Exalted Station. O Lord! This is the mountain which Thou didst name Carmel in the Torah and did associate with Thyself in the scrolls and tablets.

O Lord! I commune with Thee in this Most Exalted Spot in the darkness of night, calling upon Thee with a throbbing heart and flowing tears, supplicating before Thee and imploring Thee, saying: O Lord! The fires of war have been kindled in valleys, hills and plains, and the flames of conflict have spread even to the depths of the seas and heights of the air with ruination and destruction. The earth is ablaze with its fires, and the seas are encompassed by their tempests, thunderbolts and floods. O Lord! Souls are choking, breasts are rattling, the earth is convulsed and has become so strait that even the beasts and birds are disturbed in their dens and nests, trembling in their lairs and caves.

We hear naught but the wailing of orphans and the sighing of mothers and the weeping of fathers in the ruins, and see naught but the flowing tears of every bereaved woman and the burning hearts of every father who has lost his sons. Cities have been destroyed, nations ruined, children orphaned, and women widowed. And this is naught but the result of our heedlessness of Thy remembrance and our deprivation of Thy love. We have been preoccupied with ourselves, seized by the intoxication of passion, and have followed the path of heedlessness and blindness. We have forsaken the way of guidance and chosen the path of obstinacy, forgotten the counsels in the ancient scriptures, and abandoned the admonitions in the Preserved Tablet, the Outstretched Parchment, and the Most Great Sign.

O Lord! O Lord! I acknowledge and confess our sins. We have deserved every dire calamity and every grievous catastrophe by what our hands have wrought in this transient, earthly life. O Lord! Minds have been bewildered, souls have become weary, faces have turned to dust, and there remain but blind eyes, deaf ears, dumb tongues, and hearts heedless of Thy remembrance, overflowing with the desires of self and passion.

O Lord! Thou hast stated explicitly in Thy Manifest Book and Thy Great Announcement that "God will not change the condition of a people until they change what is in themselves" and "When they forgot God, He made them forget themselves." O Lord! The factions have penetrated deep into the fields of struggle and conflict, and this sweeping torrent and grinding war cannot be halted save through Thy mercy which embraceth all that was and shall be.

O Lord! Deal not with us according to our evil deeds, and take us not to task for our sins and transgressions, for imperfection is characteristic of all contingent beings in the realm of existence, while pardon and forgiveness are what Thou hast accustomed those in existence to. O Lord! Nothing beseemeth the Divine Presence save grace and mercy toward every sinner fallen into the abyss of degradation and wretchedness, and the perfection of Lordship is not manifested except through the imperfections of servitude.

O Lord! The brilliant rays from the Sun of Truth dispel the pitch darkness, and pure water removes all filth and turbidity in the realm of existence. O Lord! Sins are like rising foam while Thy forgiveness is like a surging ocean, and transgressions are like the growing tree of Zaqqum...

O Lord! Thy forgiveness is a fire whose flames are intense. O Lord! Lift away the veil and disperse these dense clouds hovering on the horizon. Quell these fires and calm this tempest, that blood may be spared, that mercy may be shown to the people, and compassion to the orphans, until the whirlwinds subside, the thunderbolts are silenced, the floods cease, the hills appear, souls find peace, and hearts are gladdened. We thank Thee for Thy abundant grace, O Mighty One, O Forgiving One!

O Lord! In the scriptures and tablets Thou hast set forth counsels which, were they to be cast upon solid rock, would cause rivers to gush forth and would make it crumble in awe of the Mighty, the Compeller. Yet hearts are harder than rock, and souls are wrapped in heedlessness and delusion. Neither signs nor warnings profit the evil-doers.

O Lord! Thy counsels have spread far and wide to the East and West of the earth. Thou hast called all to love and harmony, to abandon discord throughout the world, that the East and West of the earth might embrace, that the peoples of the earth, both nomad and settled, might clasp hands, their dispersed elements be gathered, their disheveled state be put in order, their darkness be dispelled and their light shine forth. But eyes have been blinded, ears have become deaf, hearts and inner beings have hardened like rocks and stones, minds and understanding have become dull, souls have forgotten the text of the Book. Thou didst warn them of a severe reckoning, thus they have deserved harsh punishment and the word of chastisement has been proved against them.

O Lord! Hold us not to account for our sins and stumbling, make us not a warning to those who have eyes to see. Guide us to the straight path that we may awaken from the slumber of passion and be saved from heedlessness and blindness. O Lord of Signs, rescue us from the pit of desires and deliver us from our lapses.

O Lord! We have forgotten faithfulness and found comfort in estrangement, we have kept company with the wicked and the immoral. We have no savior but Thee, no helper but Thee, no protector but Thee. We have placed our trust in Thee and committed all affairs to Thee. Deal with us through Thy grace and forgiveness, not through Thy justice and wrath. Verily Thou art the Generous, Thou art the Merciful, Thou art the Ever-Relenting, Thou art the All-Forgiving.

O Lord! The party of the righteous, the company of the virtuous, and the band of the free in every land turn to Thee morning and evening, imploring Thee in the depths of night and at dawn. They wail like the bereaved in the darkest nights, burning with the fire of grief and anguish and the pain of separation. They long for reunion even if it means splitting of souls, crossing of hills and heights, traversing valleys and slopes. But these mountain-shattering wars have prevented this, cutting off news and closing all doors.

O Lord! Comfort them in their loneliness, deliver them from their bewilderment, and prepare for them a way of right guidance.

O Lord! Thou knowest my yearning and longing, my burning and anguish in separation from them, my intense desire to meet them, my passion in loving them, my obsession with their remembrance, and my ardent desire to behold them. Their remembrance is my treasure and my daily practice through nights and days. When night falls, my heart roams in remembrance of their radiant faces. I yearn for them as the dove yearns for verdant gardens.

O Lord! O Lord! Open the doors, prepare the means, make safe the way, and smooth the path until the sincere ones gather in exalted assemblies and those attracted by Thy remembrance come together in great meetings, speaking of Thy bounty among all peoples, tasting the honey of reunion, and being touched by the breezes of acceptance that make them sway as though intoxicated. Verily Thou art the Mighty, the Powerful, the Bestower! Verily Thou art the Generous, the Merciful, the Chosen One!

O my Lord, my Defender, my Help in peril! Lowly do I entreat Thee, ailing do I come unto Thee to be healed, humbly do I cry out to Thee with my tongue, my soul, my spirit:

O Lord! Have mercy on the suckling infants, the humble elderly, and even the grazing animals. Questions to carry forward

  1. Whose suffering becomes visible in these prayers, and how does that attention change the meaning of peace?
  2. What does it require to pray for the transformation of people engaged in violence while also seeking protection for those they harm?
  3. How might the Buddhist practice of extending goodwill to all beings illuminate the reach of these prayers, and how do their different forms of spiritual address remain distinct?
  4. What actions might follow from praying to become a servant or promoter of peace, and how could those actions connect with institutions of justice?
