Prayer for nearness to God: longing that changes a life

Editorial introduction

To ask for nearness to God is to begin from a strange position: the One addressed already sees and knows the person who speaks, as the psalmist found when no distance or darkness lay beyond the divine presence [1]. Bahá’u’lláh and ‘Abdu’l-Bahá teach prayer from inside that relationship, and its longing takes vivid shapes: a thirsty fish seeking the ocean, a bird with broken wings that longs to soar, a leaf turning in the winds of the divine will, a heart asking that its veils of desire fall away. Such longing never stays private. It becomes thanksgiving for grace already received, remembrance morning and evening, contentment with whatever God decrees, and a plea that distance from home may draw others near. The Qur’an’s word that God is near and answers the one who calls, while asking that the caller respond in turn [2], names the exchange at the heart of it. From here the path leads into nearness to God itself, into prayer in its many forms, and toward meeting the Manifestation in whom God’s presence is attained.

287

I beseech Thee, O Thou King of existence and Lord of the seen and the unseen, to assist me to serve Thy Cause amidst Thy creatures and to make me ever gaze toward Thee in all conditions. … O my Lord! O Lord! Assist us in Thy service, and enable us to serve at Thy threshold, and grant us the fruits of the tree of Thy knowledge, and admit us into the garden of Thy gift, and cause us to abide in the paradise of Thy oneness, and make us Thy distinguished servants in Thy Cause and the inheritors of Thy Prophets and Messengers - honored servants who speak not until He hath spoken and who act by His command.

290

O Lord! Thou art my hope and the ultimate goal of my aspirations. 294

In the name of God, the Most Holy, the Most Exalted!

Glorified art Thou, O my God! I beseech Thee by Thy greatness whereby all things have been made great, and by the lights of Thy countenance whereby all things have been illumined, and by the wondrous signs of Thy names whereby all things have been distinguished one from another, and by Thy name which Thou hast made to stand over all things, and by Thy sovereignty whereby Thou hast prevailed over all things, and by Thy verses whereby the realities of all things have been attracted, and by Thy Word whereby all who are in earth and heaven were struck with fear, and by Thy call in the holy wilderness whereby the heart of the world was set ablaze and whereby Thou didst guide the sincere ones to the shore of the ocean of Thy oneness and caused the lovers to soar in the atmosphere of Thy nearness and meeting, and attracted the hearts of them that are nigh unto Thee to the right hand of the throne of Thy mercy - I beseech Thee to accept from us what we have wrought in Thy love and good-pleasure.

O my God, my Lord and my Beloved! They who have tasted the sweetness of Thy call and hastened to the shadow of Thy bounties and the proximity of Thy favors and followed what Thou didst command them out of love for Thyself and desire for Thy presence - these move not except by Thy leave and speak not save after Thy command.

O my God and my Master! I am Thy servant and the son of Thy servant. I have risen from my couch at this dawntide when the Daystar of Thy oneness hath shone forth from the Dayspring of Thy will, and hath shed its radiance upon the whole world, according to what had been ordained in the Books of Thy Decree.

Praise be unto Thee, O my God, that Thou hast caused us to awaken illumined by the light of Thy knowledge and to fast purely for Thy sake. O Lord! Send down upon us that which will make us independent of all else save Thee and detached from all except Thyself. Then write down for me and for my loved ones and my kindred, both male and female, the good of this world and the world to come. Then protect us, O Thou Who art the Beloved of creation and the Desire of invention, by Thy supreme greatness from those whom Thou hast made to be the manifestations of the slinking whisperer who whisper in the breasts of men. Verily, Thou art the Powerful over what Thou willest, and Thou art the Protector, the Self-Subsisting.

O my God, send Thy blessings upon Him Whom Thou hast made the Self-Subsisting One over Thy most beautiful names, and through Whom Thou hast distinguished between the righteous and the wicked, that Thou mayest make us successful in that which Thou lovest and art pleased with. And, O my God, send Thy peace upon Thy Words and Thy Letters, and upon those who have turned toward Thee and have set their faces toward Thy countenance and have hearkened unto Thy call. Verily, Thou art the Lord of the servants and their Sovereign, and Thou art powerful over all things.

(Bahá’u’lláh, 1291-03 [1874-Apr], to Da (Rida) -- BH02777)
295

I beseech Thee to assist me in Thy love and good-pleasure and in serving Thy Cause in Thy days. Then ordain for me, O my God, that which is best for me and draw me nigh unto Thee under all conditions.

(Bahá’u’lláh, 1292-06-03 [1875-Jul-7], to Jinab-i-Mirza Abd al-Wahhab -- BH10323)
296

I beseech Thee by the lights of Thy manifestation and by the mysteries concealed within Thy knowledge, to aid me to perform such deeds from which the fragrance of Thy good-pleasure shall never cease to emanate. O Lord! I am Thy servant and the son of Thy servant. I acknowledge Thy manifestation and Thy sovereignty, and confess that which Thou hast sent down in Thy Book. I beseech Thee to assist me in Thy remembrance and praise amongst Thy servants.

(Bahá’u’lláh, to Mirza Muhammad Rahim -- BH06777)
297

The Tongue of Grandeur proclaimeth and saith: O God of the world and Lord of eternity! I beseech Thee by the fire wherewith the hearts of Thy chosen ones were set ablaze in Thy days, and by the light whereby the faces of Thy creation were illumined, and by the Name which Thou hast made the balance of Thy Cause and the path of Thy sovereignty amongst Thy creatures, that Thou mayest open, through the key of Thy craftsmanship, unto every atom a door leading to Thy presence and a way unto the ocean of Thy reunion.

(Bahá’u’lláh, 1294 ? [1876-1877], to Shaban-Ali -- BH09754)
298

O Lord! Send down upon Thy loved ones, both male and female, that which befitteth Thy generosity, O Thou in Whose hand is the Kingdom of Names. Then ordain for every soul that which will draw him nigh unto Thee in this world and the next.

(Bahá’u’lláh, 1290 [1873] or earlier, to Ruqiyyih -- BH09866)

Questions to carry forward

  1. How does the opening affirmation of being seen and known change the meaning of asking to draw near? Which later prayer brings a new dimension to that relationship?
  2. What do the recurring images of thirst, fire, veils, doors, wings and oceans allow the prayers to express? Choose two images that pull your understanding in different directions and explore what each reveals.
  3. How do the prayers hold personal longing together with uncertainty about what is best, contentment with divine will and the desire to act? What might change in the way a person prays when these are held together?
  4. How do the passages about journeys, prevented visits, suffering and bereavement deepen the idea of presence? What becomes clearer when their particular circumstances remain in view?
  5. What happens as the voice of prayer moves among I, we and prayers for another person? How might the request for nearness reshape service, family relationships or a community’s attention to others?
  6. What new questions emerge beside Psalm 139 and Qur’an 2:186? Which connected subject—nearness to God, prayer more generally, or attaining God’s presence through the Manifestation—would help you explore them further?

The 659 subjects and their relationships are human-generated; the brief subject summaries are AI-generated. Relevant passages touching on each subject -- some human generated and some selected with the help of AI and lightly vetted -- appear below the knowledge graph. These passages can be downloaded to PDF for offline reading.

Study guides

The passages compiled under each subject have been further condensed and re-ordered to facilitate an introductory thematic study of the texts. At the end of each guide is a set of open-ended questions and hyperlinks to adjacent subjects.
