Love beyond separation: praying for the departed

prayer for the departed

Editorial introduction

Death ends a presence but not a relationship. ‘Abdu’l-Bahá teaches that sincere prayer has its effect in the world beyond and that the bond with those who have gone before is never severed, so to pray for the departed is to keep on loving someone actively: asking pardon and further blessing for a soul now out of sight, while admitting that the one who prays also needs an intercessor. Bahá’u’lláh and ‘Abdu’l-Bahá picture the one who has ascended as a guest welcomed to a heavenly table, a bird freed from its cage, an ending that becomes a beginning of favors. Such prayer makes room for tears, and takes practical shape in gifts to the poor, kindness to orphans and the continuation of a loved one’s good example. The offering made for fallen soldiers in 2 Maccabees [1] and the Qur’anic plea for those who preceded us in faith [2] show how widely this hope has been held. From here the path leads into consolation for those who grieve, into prayer for forgiveness, and toward the spirit after death.

01

O my God! O Thou forgiver of sins, bestower of gifts, dispeller of afflictions!

Verily, I beseech Thee to forgive the sins of such as have abandoned the physical garment and have ascended to the spiritual world.

O my Lord! Purify them from trespasses, dispel their sorrows, and change their darkness into light. Cause them to enter the garden of happiness, cleanse them with the most pure water, and grant them to behold Thy splendors on the loftiest mount.

(‘Abdu’l-Bahá, Prayer for the departed. -- AB11094)
02

In regard to asking forgiveness and reciting prayers on behalf of those souls that have hastened from this world to the next world and have not found the path of guidance, but have evinced great kindness to the friends - you had asked if requesting pardon on their behalf is permissible and beneficial. In this merciful cycle supplication, entreaty, and intercession at the threshold of oneness on behalf of the entire human race is both permissible and beneficial, for this is the cycle of the Blessed Beauty and His mercy to all created things, visible and invisible, is overflowing.

Q. Are we not able, through love and faith, to make those on the other side hear of the Cause who had not heard of it while here?

(‘Abdu’l-Bahá, Words to Mary Hanford Ford, spoken on 1911-Oct-18 -- ABU3450)
04

O Thou Who art my Forgiver and my Pardoner! I know not how I can intercede for anyone when I myself am in need of an intercessor through whom I may seek pardon at the gate of Thy forgiveness and take refuge in hope of Thy bounty. … Nevertheless, I beseech Thee, turn to Thee, place my trust in Thee, and implore Thee to make Thy servant Vahid, who is immersed in Thy all-encompassing ocean, to take shelter in Thy mighty stronghold, seek protection in the shelter of Thy supreme mercy, aspire to the Supreme Horizon, and be submerged in the seas of Thy great mercy.

10

The Master said that by the mercy of God, not through His justice the condition of those who have died in sin and unbelief can be changed. We are commanded to pray that their condition may be changed. As we have the power to pray for these souls here, so shall we have the same power in the afterlife --in the Kingdom. The power of this prayer of intercession is a special teaching of this religion. To pray for the dead was not given as a special religious command (of the Divine Messenger) until the day of the Blessed Perfection.
