Editorial introduction

To praise is to notice a gift for what it is and to say so. Bahá’u’lláh roots that act in a Creator whose mercy outruns every tongue that tries to describe it, and whose remembrance falls on a tired heart like rain on a garden. From that first thankfulness the eye turns outward. ‘Abdu’l-Bahá names a particular service, answers a letter delayed by travel, delights in a child’s first page of writing, a village school, a craftsman’s honest work. His encouragement is specific and seldom unconditional: improve the skill, act with humility, weigh the means at hand, care for the person beside you. Such praise is tested against character and deeds, and it learns to sit with grief without hurrying it. The path runs on into gratitude, into the consolation offered to the bereaved and persecuted, and into the call to action that turns appreciation into effort. Paul’s plea that the Thessalonians build one another up while testing everything [1] poses the same question: how does a community encourage without ceasing to discern?

O handmaid of Baha, the grandmother of Aqa Ahmad! Freedom and wisdom are not dependent on youth or old age. Therefore we beseech God that like tender saplings you may be fresh and verdant through the breezes of the All-Merciful.

(‘Abdu’l-Bahá, to Grandmother of Ahmad -- AB11369)

Say not "Khusraw" - rather say "a whole world of love and faithfulness, affection and purity." He is the embodiment of spirit and the personification of love. He is ever cheerful and smiling, full of joy and fragrance.

(‘Abdu’l-Bahá, 1913-Oct-29, to Inayatullah Suhrab -- AB12103)
72

There I found wonderful Baha'is. They were the embodiments of love and faith. They brought me health and joy. In many respects the German believers are unique and peerless. They are faithful, strong and firm. I loved them very much. Their attraction and the fire of their love are an example and their genuine spirit of hospitality and kindness is worthy of imitation. They are the brilliant stars in the heaven of Baha.

He, from the heights of this sublime, this holy, this mighty, and transcendent station, seeth all things, heareth all things, and is, at this hour, proclaiming: Blessed art thou, O Javad, inasmuch as thou hast attained unto that which no man before thee hath attained. In truth, the Naddafs have attained unto the fruit of existence. My Pen beareth witness to their detachment, My tongue to their acceptance, and My heart to their steadfastness in the Cause of God, the Self-Subsisting, the All-Compelling. They are among those souls who from the earliest days until now have been occupied with His praise and glorification and have been assisted in unity in His path, exalted be He. Today is the day of deeds and not of words, and their deeds are a truthful witness and faithful testimony to their love, detachment and service.

(Bahá’u’lláh -- BH11905)

O Khurshid! Strive that thou mayest become in reality like unto thy name -- a heavenly luminary shining brilliantly above the horizon of the firmament of love; for a name alone is not sufficient in this day: rather what is requisite and fitting is a matching character, a reality that correspondeth to the name.

I was informed of the contents of thy letter and rejoiced with the fragrances which are being diffused from the garden of its texts. It showed that thou art inebriated with the wine of the love of God and moved by the breezes of acceptance which are blowing from the point of the favor of God.

By my life, I was rejoiced at thy humility, submissiveness, lowliness and meekness in the Cause of God, inasmuch as rendering service to the maid-servants of God is a mighty crown, which all the greatest queens among women will glory to wear.

89

A hundred thousand praises and thanks befit and beseem the loved ones and the chosen ones of the Friend, who are detached from themselves and from the world, alive and steadfast through the name of the Desired One. Through tongue and utterance, through pen and deeds and actions, they summon the servants to the Dawning-Place of Revelation and the Dayspring of Inspiration. They speak with their tongues and gesture with their hands, and through movements of brow and head they draw the heedless to the realm of awareness and bestow wakefulness upon them that slumber.

O maidservant of God!

Render thanks unto the One true Beloved for having guided thee to recognize His own Self. Many are the daughters of kings and other notables who, through having been veiled from recognizing the Beauty of the All-Merciful, are not remembered by the Lord. Thou, however, hast been remembered by Him, and thy name set down by the Pen of His Command.

I am preparing you for the advent of a mighty Day.

95

O beloved of God, His chosen ones, and those attracted by His fragrances! If you would reflect a little and ponder deeply on the reality of things, you would observe in what boundless ocean of grace and benevolence you are immersed, and in what paradise of Ridvan you abide eternally.

131

O nightingale of the garden of inner meanings! Among the signs of divine bounty in this Most Merciful Dispensation is that one like yourself, in the beginning of life, should compose such a book and establish such proofs and evidences. This is purely through the effects of bounty and the radiance of the grace of guidance from His Holiness the Most Merciful. Truly you are a melodious nightingale in the rose garden of utterance and a diligent pupil in the school of knowledge and understanding.

(‘Abdu’l-Bahá, 1904 ca., to Lisanud-Din son of Vaiz et al -- AB03209)
133

O dove of the garden of divine knowledge! Consider the grace and bounty of God, that He chose you from among the people of Israel and selected you from the lineage of His Holiness Khalil, so that in your childhood, with utmost freedom, you might study and learn in the school of divine knowledge and become educated in mystical understanding, and as a nightingale in the assembly of speech and utterance, you have composed such a treatise with perfect eloquence and rhetoric in proving the divine Cause, so that your praiseworthy traces may remain eternal and everlasting in the world, and in all centuries and ages the wise ones of the world may loose their tongues in praise and tribute to you. You have become renowned throughout the horizons and nurtured in the school of illumination.

The treatise that you submitted was reviewed. In truth it is a brilliant sign and an evident standard. If you look with the eye of reality, it is greater than the sovereignty of East and West, for the sovereignty of East and West does not endure or remain stable - rather it is a passing shadow and fearsome illusions. But this eternal crown and diadem of leadership will remain fixed and stable upon your brow in the everlasting world.

Therefore praise be to the pure Lord that He has again made Israel glorious, for He has gathered souls like you from Israel under the banner of the Covenant. So give thanks to God for this great bounty.

Would that a group of young saplings from the divine garden were present in that school, and day and night with the utmost joy and fragrance would receive proofs and arguments from that eminent leader, and each would write a treatise through clear inspiration in proving the Blessed Cause. Let the competitors strive for this.

My Lord, my hope, my shelter and my refuge! Assist this divine youth with the hosts of inspiration and cause him to praise You among the people, and make him Your brilliant sign and Your evident standard among the people until he speaks with the most wondrous utterance in gatherings of knowledge and wisdom and composes marvelous works containing proofs and arguments. And assist his noble teacher, the distinguished man, with the greatest gift in existence among the people of prostration, so that he may educate souls who are supplicating to You, beseeching before You, and trusting in You. Verily You are the Generous, You are the Merciful, and You are the Mighty, the Bestower.

134

The letter was eloquent and articulate, therefore I became hopeful about you that when you reach maturity you will become a luminous, divine and merciful youth, pure and sanctified from the dirt of the natural world, receiving your portion and share from the purity and luminosity of the divine world, and becoming a cause of glory to the human world.

Thou art He the excellence of Whose glory hath exalted them who are the sources of authority and honor, the potency of Whose might hath empowered them who are the fountain-heads of energy and strength, the dominion of Whose will hath elevated the exponents of Thy Cause above all that are in heaven and on earth, and the life-giving effusions of Whose Pen have quickened the souls of the denizens of the kingdom of creation.

(Bahá’u’lláh, 1290 [1873] or earlier, to Ali Akbar from Ha Nun -- BH04743)
288

Lauded be Thy name, O my God! I am so carried away by the breezes blowing from Thy presence that I have forgotten my self and all that I possess. This is but a sign of the wonders of Thy grace and bountiful favors vouchsafed unto me.

(Bahá’u’lláh, 1290 [1873] or earlier, to Mirza Muhammad Taqi -- BH05408)
289

Tribulations, however woeful, can never hinder me from remembering Thee or from celebrating Thy praise. Every vexation borne for love of Thee is a token of Thy mercy unto Thy creatures, and every ordeal suffered in Thy path is but a gift from Thee bestowed on Thy chosen ones.

(Bahá’u’lláh, 1290 [1873] or earlier, to Mirza Muhammad -- BH08848)
290

Glorified art Thou, O Lord my God! Thou art He the fire of Whose love hath set ablaze the hearts of them who have recognized Thy unity, and the splendors of Whose countenance have illuminated the faces of such as have drawn nigh unto Thy court. How plenteous, O my God, is the stream of Thy knowledge! How sweet, O my Beloved, is the injury which, in my love for Thee, and for the sake of Thy pleasure, I suffer from the darts of the wicked doers! How pleasing are the wounds which, in Thy path and in order to proclaim Thy Faith, I sustain from the swords of the infidels!

I beseech Thee, by Thy name through which Thou turnest restlessness into tranquillity, fear into confidence, weakness into strength, and abasement into glory, that Thou of Thy grace wilt aid me and Thy servants to exalt Thy name, to deliver Thy Message, and to proclaim Thy Cause, in such wise that we may remain unmoved by either the assaults of the transgressors or the wrath of the infidels, O Thou Who art my Well-Beloved!

I am, O my Lord, Thy handmaiden, who hath hearkened to Thy call, and hastened unto Thee, fleeing from herself and resting her heart upon Thee. I implore Thee, O my Lord, by Thy name out of which all the treasures of the earth were brought forth, to shield me from the hints of such as have disbelieved in Thee and repudiated Thy truth.

Powerful art Thou to do what Thou pleasest. Thou art, verily, the All-Knowing, the All-Wise.

(Bahá’u’lláh, 1290 [1873] or earlier, to Sister of Husayn -- BH06429)
291

Say: Praise be unto Thee, O my God, my Lord, and my Support, for having enabled me to recognize the Dawning-Place of Thy verses, the Dayspring of Thy clear tokens, and the Source of Thy commandments and ordinances - He upon Whom Thou didst send down the Furqan, and through Whom Thou didst separate truth from falsehood, and light from darkness.

(Bahá’u’lláh, 1305-10-24 [1888-Jul-4], to Ahmad Effendi -- BH11772)
292

Glorified art Thou, O my God! This is a day among Thy days and an hour from the hours of Thy holiness, which Thou hast specially chosen for Thyself and attributed to Thy presence. Thou hast exalted it for the perpetuation of Thy name and manifestation of Thy sovereignty, and made it the dayspring of all days through what Thou hast showered upon it from the revelations of the throne of Thy grandeur and the signs of the glory of Thy grace.

(Bahá’u’lláh, to Rida -- BH03245)
293

Every time I am reminded of Thee and muse on Thy virtues, I am seized with such ecstasies and am so enravished by Thee that I find myself unable to make mention of Thy name and to extol Thee.

(Bahá’u’lláh, 1290 [1873] or earlier -- BH02872)

He Is God

Glorified art Thou, O Lord my God! This is one of the days of the Ridvan Festival whereon a dwelling-place in the Prison hath been embellished through the presence of the Exponent of Thy Beauty, Who deigned to accept an invitation at the earnest request of one that hath been carried away by longing and desire.

Magnified be Thou, inasmuch as Thou hast shone forth above the horizon of the Prison with so dazzling a splendour that all parts of the world have been illumined by virtue of the bounty Thou hast conferred upon those that have entered beneath Thy shadow and were admitted within Thy precincts. On this Day Thou didst unloose Thy tongue with holy utterances and scattered abroad pearls of inner meaning and exposition upon all the denizens of the entire creation. Through the influence of this chalice, do Thou revive O Lord, all the dwellers of the earth and ordain for the people of Baha -- they that yearn to behold Thy face but have been turned away by reason of what the hands of Thine enemies have wrought -- ordain for them that which will profit them, O Thou Who art the Lord of names and the Possessor of earth and heavens! Grant them then a portion from the outpourings of Thy mercy in these days, when every abased one is exalted, every believer is adorned with grace, every dejected soul is stirred up with joy, every poor one is enriched and every seeker hath voiced Thy praise.

O Lord! Glory be to Thee for Thou hast singled out Thy loved ones, distinguished them from among Thy people and hast turned Thy gaze towards them from this place, wherein the Tabernacle of Thy Cause is incarcerated. O Lord! Hinder them not from attaining the things Thou dost possess, but cause their hearts to be enraptured by the sweet savours of Thy divine Revelation, in such wise that they may, thereby, be detached from all else but Thee and may set their faces towards the court of Thy favour and loving kindness. Verily, potent art Thou to do what Thou willest; powerful art Thou over all things, and lauded art Thou, O Desire of the worlds!

(Bahá’u’lláh, Prayer for the Ridvan festival -- BH04229)
295

Blessed is the soul that hath attained thereunto, and blessed the day that hath been honored by Thy manifestation, and blessed the land that hath been illumined by the lights of Thy countenance.

(Bahá’u’lláh, to Fatimih Sultan Bagum -- BH08842)
296

Lauded be Thy name, O Thou Who causest the winds to blow and the dawn to break, Who revealest the verses and unveilest the proofs! All things proclaim that Thou art God, and that there is none other God but Thee, the Sovereign, the All-Powerful, the Most Exalted, the Most Great. Magnified be Thy name, O Thou Who art the Fashioner of the heavens and the Creator of all names, Who sheddest Thy splendour upon all things through the power of Thy Most Great Name.

(Bahá’u’lláh, Revealed for the Most Great Festival -- BH01673)
297

I give praise unto Thee, O my God, that Thou hast ordained this day as a festival unto such of Thy servants as enjoy near access to Thee and unto Thy loved ones who are devoted to Thyself.

… I yield praise unto Thee, O Lord my God, inasmuch as Thou hast demonstrated Thy proofs and perfected Thy blessings.

(Bahá’u’lláh, Prayer for Naw-Ruz, 1291 ? [1874-1875] -- BH02896)
298

I beseech Thee, O Creator of the heavens and Fashioner of names, to graciously aid those who have sheltered beneath the shadow of Thine abounding mercy and have raised their voices amidst the peoples of the world for the glorification of Thy Name.

(Bahá’u’lláh, 1292-03 [1875-Apr], to Haji Siyyid Mirza -- BH03262)
299

The praise which hath dawned from Thy most august Self, and the glory which hath shone forth from Thy most effulgent Beauty, rest upon Thee, O Thou Who art the Manifestation of Grandeur, and the King of Eternity, and the Lord of all who are in heaven and on earth!

(Bahá’u’lláh, Ziyarat-Namih (Tablet of Visitation) -- BH02307)

Questions to carry forward

  1. What relationships do the readings establish between praising God, thanking others and recognizing human achievement? Compare the account of undeserved grace with passages on effort and service. How can gratitude and responsibility reinforce each other?
  2. What makes encouragement personal and credible? Compare letters that name a contribution, explain delayed correspondence, leave a choice to the recipient or revise an earlier criticism. How might these details change the way praise is received?
  3. How do the sources distinguish reputation, titles and eloquence from character and deeds? What tensions arise when reading historical racial or gender language beside affirmations of dignity and equality? How can those tensions be examined without altering the texts?
  4. What kinds of encouragement are offered to children, teachers, women, craftspeople and artists? Which passages connect praise with practical support, disciplined learning or ethical conduct, and which capacities do they leave room to develop?
  5. How do the letters and prayers respond to grief, incapacity and persecution? Compare acknowledgment of distress, the use of humor, petitions for relief and the instruction to preserve life. What would it mean to offer hope without minimizing loss?
  6. Compare 1 Thessalonians 5:11–25 with the readings on fellowship and service. How are encouragement, patient care and discernment related in each setting? Explore the six neighboring subjects: which connection changes your understanding of a particular passage?
