Goodly deeds: when conviction becomes a gift to the world

goodly deeds; actions

Editorial introduction

Someone is hungry and cold, and our certainty that generosity is a virtue feeds no one. ‘Abdu’l-Bahá begins there, with the plain fact that knowledge is not enough, and Bahá’u’lláh presses the point: deeds are the test of words, and words without them cannot quench a single thirst. An unbeliever who does good is judged better than a professing believer whose conduct betrays him, and a Bahá’í is to be known by deeds rather than by name. Yet action is never cut loose from the inner life. A deed set as a snare to win reward loses its life; a charity performed for admiration spoils in the giving; the act done purely, however small, outweighs a mountain in the mirror of God’s knowledge and leaves a fragrance that never fades. Faith, in the Epistle of James, faces the same brother or sister in need of warmth and food, and is asked what it has actually supplied. The road runs on from here into the old quarrel between words and deeds, into service to others, and into the quiet authority of example.

01

Knowledge is not enough. We hope by the Love of God we shall put it into practice. A spiritual universal force is needed for this. Meetings are good for engendering spiritual force. To know that to reach a state of perfection is possible is good, to march forward on the path is better. We know that to help the poor and to be merciful is good and pleases God, but knowledge alone does not feed the starving man, nor can the poor be warmed by knowledge or words, in the bitter winter.

(‘Abdu’l-Bahá, Words spoken in 1911 -- ABU1410)
02

O people! Words must be supported by deeds, for deeds are the true test of words. Without the former, the latter can never quench the thirst of the yearning soul, nor unlock the portals of vision before the eyes of the blind.

(Bahá’u’lláh, Lawh-i-Manikchi Sahib, 1296-08 [1879-Jul], to Manikchi-Sahib -- BH00698)
03

Sow the seeds of love in the heart and not the seeds of hatred. The reflection in the glass proves whether we are laughing or frowning. By our actions we reveal what is growing in the heart. Actions are mirrors of the soul.

(‘Abdu’l-Bahá, Words to Julia Grundy spoken around Jan. 1905 -- ABU3384)
04

An act, however infinitesimal, is, when viewed in the mirror of the knowledge of God, mightier than a mountain. Every drop proffered in His path is as the sea in that mirror.

(Bahá’u’lláh, 1300 ? [1882-1883], to Ghulam-Ali son of Dhabih -- BH03999)
05

And whatsoever virtuous deeds have been revealed in the Holy Tablets from the Divine Pen - the benefit thereof shall return both to the doer and to the one for whom it was done.

(Bahá’u’lláh, 1294 ? [1876-1877], to Mahdi al-Fath-Abadi -- BH04859)
06

Love manifests its reality in deeds, not only in words -- these alone are without effect. In order that love may manifest its power there must be an object, an instrument, a motive.

(‘Abdu’l-Bahá, Words spoken on 1911-Oct-24 in Paris -- ABU0281)
07

Certainly, a non-believer who performs good deeds is better than one who claims love and faith but whose deeds reveal satanic temptations. However, perfection is achieved when deeds and faith are combined, and the person of good conduct strives to spread the unity of the human world and promote peace and oneness among the nations and peoples of the world.

(‘Abdu’l-Bahá, Words spoken on 1913-May-17 in Paris -- ABU1305)
08

Make not your deeds as snares wherewith to entrap the object of your aspiration, and deprive not yourselves of this Ultimate Objective for which have ever yearned all such as have drawn nigh unto God. Say: The very life of all deeds is My good pleasure, and all things depend upon Mine acceptance.

… All that are on earth shall pass away, while good deeds alone shall endure; to the truth of My words God doth Himself bear witness.

(Bahá’u’lláh, Kitab-i-Aqdas (The Most Holy Book), 1290-05-15 [1873-Jul-11] -- BH00001)
09

Ascribe not to any soul that which thou wouldst not have ascribed to thee, and say not that which thou doest not. This is My command unto thee, do thou observe it.

(Bahá’u’lláh, Hidden Words - Arabic, 1274 ca. [1857-1858] -- BH00386)
10

Indeed one's righteous deeds testify to the truth of one's words.

(Bahá’u’lláh, Lawh-i-Dunya (Tablet of the World), 1308 ? [1890-1891], to Mirza Siyyid Muhammad Afnan (known as Aqa Mirza Aqa Nurud-Din) -- BH00238)
11

Holy words and pure and goodly deeds ascend unto the heaven of celestial glory. Strive that your deeds may be cleansed from the dust of self and hypocrisy and find favor at the court of glory; for ere long the assayers of mankind shall, in the holy presence of the Adored One, accept naught but absolute virtue and deeds of stainless purity.

… Guidance hath ever been given by words, and now it is given by deeds. Every one must show forth deeds that are pure and holy, for words are the property of all alike, whereas such deeds as these belong only to Our loved ones. Strive then with heart and soul to distinguish yourselves by your deeds.

(Bahá’u’lláh, Hidden Words - Persian, 1274 ca. [1857-1858] -- BH00113)
12

If a man is not characterized by these excellent qualities, it is certain that he has never attained to so much as a drop out of the fathomless river of the waters of life that flows through the teachings of the Holy Books, nor caught the faintest breath of the fragrant breezes that blow from the gardens of God; for nothing on earth can be demonstrated by words alone, and every level of existence is known by its signs and symbols, and every degree in man's development has its identifying mark.

(‘Abdu’l-Bahá, Madaniyyih (The Secret of Divine Civilization), 1875, to The People of Iran -- AB00004)
13

Realizing that wealth is desirable is not becoming wealthy. The admission that scientific attainment is praiseworthy does not confer scientific knowledge. Acknowledgment of the excellence of honor does not make a man honorable. Knowledge of human conditions and the needed remedy for them is not the cause of their betterment. To admit that health is good does not constitute health. A skilled physician is needed to remedy existing human conditions.

(‘Abdu’l-Bahá, Public address given at Theosophical Lodge on 1912-May-30 -- ABU0041)
14

Thoughts may be divided into two classes:

(1st) Thought that belongs to the world of thought alone.

(2nd) Thought that expresses itself in action.

Some men and women glory in their exalted thoughts, but if these thoughts never reach the plane of action they remain useless: the power of thought is dependent on its manifestation in deeds.

(‘Abdu’l-Bahá, Words spoken on 1911-Oct-18 in Paris -- ABU1414)
15

The world is wrong, just because people talk too much and do not carry out their ideals. If action took the place of words, the world would change very soon.

(‘Abdu’l-Bahá, Words spoken in 1911 -- ABU2032)
16

The essence of faith is fewness of words and abundance of deeds; he whose words exceed his deeds, know verily his death is better than his life.

(Bahá’u’lláh, Asl-i-Kullu'l-Khayr (Words of Wisdom) -- BH02183)
17

Words must be followed by deeds. Whoso accepteth the words of the Friend is a man of deeds - otherwise a corpse is better than he.

(Bahá’u’lláh, ca. 1289-1290? -- BH01509)
18

Say: O people! If ye say what ye do not practice, what then is the difference between you and those who said "God is our Lord," yet when He came to them upon the clouds of holiness, they denied Him and were among the rejectors?

(Bahá’u’lláh, Suriy-i-Bayan, to Shaykh (Muhammad brother of Ahmad) -- BH00144)
19

Mere acceptance of the Cause and acknowledgment of the truth is not and hath never been sufficient, even as all people today make such claims, yet the Tongue of Grandeur beareth witness to their lies, calumnies, pride, heedlessness and treachery.

(Bahá’u’lláh, 1293? [1875-1876], to Mulla Ali Bajistani -- BH02385)
20

How many souls there are who claim to have turned to Him and recognized Him, yet in their deeds and actions they are found wanting.

(Bahá’u’lláh, 1296 ? [1878-1879], to Sister of Hudhud -- BH06538)
21

O thou who art attracted by the divine fragrances wafting from the gardens of knowledge! The stages of spiritual recognition, certitude, faith and assurance require proofs and evidence, signs and testimonies. The inward without the outward is deficient, and belief without deeds is void.

(‘Abdu’l-Bahá, to Abdu'llah Sahihfurush -- AB12190)
22

O thou who art firm and steadfast! Faith pertains to the heart and soul, and this is a hidden and concealed matter. However, its proof lies in deeds and conduct. If one's way and behavior demonstrate sincerity, then it is established and confirmed.

(‘Abdu’l-Bahá, 1919-Feb-03, to Aqa Mirza Yahya Kalimi Amidul-Atibba -- AB06360)
23

We counsel you to perform goodly deeds. Every soul's station is made manifest through his deeds, for deeds are as mirrors wherein the reality of the doer is revealed and evident.

(Bahá’u’lláh, 1302-04-26 [1885-Feb-12], to Baha'is of Baku et al -- BH02238)
24

Religion is as a lamp, and trustworthiness is as a kind companion, and truthfulness is as a garment for the temple of man. The doer is known by his deeds, not his words. Deeds are as a mirror that telleth the story of the doers. Acceptable deeds are clearly distinguished from those that are rejected.

(Bahá’u’lláh, to Aqa Allah Virdi et al -- BH00681)
25

The quality of man lies in his conduct and deeds.

(Bahá’u’lláh, 1298 ? [1880-1881], to Ghulam Rida Kazimi Muqaddam -- BH10950)
26

The deeds and actions of every soul reveal his station and rank.

(Bahá’u’lláh, to Asad -- BH03036)
27

This is the standard - look ye at every soul according to their deeds and behavior, that the fruit of existence may become manifest and the banner of guidance may wave through the holy fragrances.

(‘Abdu’l-Bahá, 1906-Jul-14, to Ustad Hasan Mimarbashi -- AB08639)
28

The station of man is revealed through deeds. Deeds are the fruits of the Tree of existence. Blessed are they that act, and blessed are they that know.

(Bahá’u’lláh, 1307 ? [1889-1890] -- BH07351)
29

Christ said, 'You will know them by their fruits,' that is, by their deeds. If a believer shows forth divine qualities, we know the true Faith is in his heart. If we do not find evidence of these qualities, if he is selfish or wicked, he has not the true kind of Faith.

(‘Abdu’l-Bahá, Words to Julia Grundy spoken around Jan. 1905 -- ABU1000)
30

The Baha'is must be known by their deeds. That is why His Holiness the Christ says: ye shall know the trees by their fruits.

(‘Abdu’l-Bahá, Words spoken at Hotel Marquardt in Stuttgart, 1913-Apr-04 -- ABU2177)
31

The Son of Mary hath said that a servant without deeds is like a tree without fruit, and a tree without fruit is fit for the fire.

(Bahá’u’lláh, 1307 ? [1889-1890], to Shams et al -- BH02909)
32

A servant without deeds is like a tree without fruit.

(Bahá’u’lláh, 1307 ? [1889-1890], to Mirza Abdullah Falah from Sad et al -- BH02815)
33

Today is the day of action and the time of harvesting fruits! A lamp without light is darkness, and a tree without fruit is but wood fit for the fire.

(‘Abdu’l-Bahá, 1900 or <, to Aqa Mirza Varqa -- AB01734)
34

In truth, a person without deeds has been and is fruitless.

(Bahá’u’lláh, 1307-04-05 [1889-Nov-29], to Haji Mirza Haydar Ali Isfahani -- BH02182)
35

And the fruits of this tree are the deeds and acts and conditions of those who are nigh unto God.

(‘Abdu’l-Bahá, to Aqa Husayn (Qazvin) -- AB08835)
36

A good deed is like unto a sapling: God causes choice and wondrous fruits to grow and appear from it.

(Bahá’u’lláh, 1306-02-12 [1888-Oct-18], to Nargis Khatun sister of Karim Attar Dhabih -- BH06034)
37

Now is the time for fruits and leaves, and the fruits of the divine tree have ever been and are goodly deeds and praiseworthy character. Withhold not these fruits from the heedless. Show them forth with spirit and joy, with wisdom and utterance.

(Bahá’u’lláh, 1304 ? [1886-1887], to Aqa Ahmad -- BH01063)
38

This is why God, exalted be His glory, hath mentioned in His Perspicuous Book, which distinguisheth between truth and falsehood, the mention of paradise and fruits and trees. And this matter, in one respect, is purely for the education of creation, that they might act virtuously and through this blessed deed attain unto lofty stations.

(Bahá’u’lláh, 1307-06-07 [1890-Jan-29], to Aqa Muhammad Rida Nahhas (Nazareth) -- BH00964)
39

They should justify their claim to be Baha'is by deeds and not by name. He is a true Baha'i who strives by day and by night to progress and advance along the path of human endeavour, whose most cherished desire is so to live and act as to enrich and illuminate the world, whose source of inspiration is the essence of divine virtue, whose aim in life is so to conduct himself as to be the cause of infinite progress. … For in this holy Dispensation, the crowning glory of bygone ages and cycles, true faith is no mere acknowledgement of the unity of God, but rather the living of a life that will manifest all the perfections and virtues implied in such belief.

(‘Abdu’l-Bahá, 1905-Apr or <, to Baha'is of Tihran et al -- AB00171)
40

Our actions will help on the world, will spread civilization, will help the progress of science, and cause the arts to develop. Without action nothing in the material world can be accomplished, neither can words unaided advance a man in the spiritual Kingdom. It is not through lip-service only that the elect of God have attained to holiness, but by patient lives of active service they have brought light into the world.

(‘Abdu’l-Bahá, Words spoken on 1911-Nov-08 in Paris -- ABU0660)
41

Be a Baha'i in reality and not in word. Be detached, be spiritual, love thy fellowmen with a motiveless love. Let thy mind be a palace of universal ideals, and thy heart the casket of the jewels of sympathy and affection. Give and not [sic] take. Be generous in thought, in act and in feeling. Let thy faith and action correspond with each other.

(‘Abdu’l-Bahá, Words spoken en route in carriage in Haifa, 1915-Feb-07 -- ABU0389)
42

Faith is not so much what we believe as what we carry out.

(‘Abdu’l-Bahá, Words to Julia Grundy spoken around Jan. 1905 -- ABU3597)
43

But in this day the question is far more important. Faith does not consist in belief, it consists in deeds. It is not sufficient to believe in Baha'u'llah and to say, "I am of the people of El-Abha"; we must act in accordance with the teachings of Baha'u'llah, who commands us to become centers of divine attraction, so that the attributes of God may emanate from us, that we may become wise and well intentioned to all the peoples of the earth in order to better the condition of all.

(‘Abdu’l-Bahá -- ABU0207)
44

On being a Baha'i He said: "Up to now, to believe was to acknowledge, to make a confession of faith, but in this greatest of all Causes, believing means to have praiseworthy qualities and to perform praiseworthy acts."

(‘Abdu’l-Bahá, Words spoken ca. 1913, unidentified passage from Mahmud's diary -- ABU3506)
45

Faith means Deeds and in turn Deeds mean Faith. If a Baha'i is confirmed in Deeds, he is accepted. His faith in and acknowledgement of the station of Baha'u'llah do not bring him in the rank of the people of the Kingdom of Abha.

… In short he must demonstrate his love for all the people through every loving means.

Just as light appear through an illumined lamp, likewise these deeds must appear from a person who calls himself a Baha'i; otherwise one does not become a Baha'i by merely acknowledging the station of Baha'u'llah...

(‘Abdu’l-Bahá, Words spoken at Rue St. Didier 30 in Paris, 1913-Feb-24 -- ABU0956)

46

Faith is not only in words. Such services are the proof of faith.

(‘Abdu’l-Bahá, 1912-Feb-19, to Muttahidih Trading Company -- AB03279)
47

O ye two well-loved handmaids of God! Whatever a man's tongue speaketh, that let him prove by his deeds. If he claimeth to be a believer, then let him act in accordance with the precepts of the Abha Kingdom.

(‘Abdu’l-Bahá, 1907-Feb-10, to Russell, Eva W et al -- AB06194)
48

Tell him, no one in this world can claim any relationship to Me except those who, in all their deeds and in their conduct, follow My example, in such wise that all the peoples of the earth would be powerless to prevent them from doing and saying that which is meet and seemly.

(Bahá’u’lláh, Words to an official in Baghdad. -- BHU0021)
49

There is no wonder in confessing the appearance of the Kingdom of God, but true wonder consists in good deeds, obedience to the commands and teachings of the True Lord, and firmness in this path, even when the storm is at its height.

(‘Abdu’l-Bahá, 1904-Jan-05 -- AB11444)
50

It is my hope that all the friends will arise in the service of the Cause; that they will live in accord with the Teachings of Baha'u'llah and the contents of my addresses; so that these Teachings may not become like Bible, unfulfilled.

All the friends must become the living embodiments of these Teachings; otherwise they will not avail.

(‘Abdu’l-Bahá, Words to a young man, spoken on 1913-Jan-22 -- ABU2775)
51

The greatness of the teachings of Baha'u'llah will be known when they are acted upon and practiced. Not one of a hundred has as yet come into force. All of your thoughts should be turned toward bringing these blessed teachings into practice.

(‘Abdu’l-Bahá, Words to some Baha'is, spoken on 1912-Sep-04 -- ABU3307)
52

In yet another instance He revealeth: "Let him then who hopeth to attain the presence of his Lord work a righteous work."

(Bahá’u’lláh, Kitab-i-Iqan (The Book of Certitude), 1278 ca. [1861-1862], to Haji Mirza Siyyid Muhammad, great uncle of the Bab (Khal-i-Akbar) -- BH00002)
53

My dear Friend: Pleasing and acceptable as is a person of righteous actions before God's Holy Threshold, yet deeds should proceed from knowledge.

(‘Abdu’l-Bahá, 1906 ca., to A C Hilbury -- AB01398)
54

Regarding your fifth question: no deed in the world remains without fruit. But deeds done with knowledge are acceptable and complete. This means that one attains to the knowledge of God and is enabled to perform good deeds.

(‘Abdu’l-Bahá, 1906 ca., to Jamshid Khudadad Farsi -- AB01473)
55

Briefly, good deeds become perfect and complete only after the knowledge of God has been acquired, the love of God has been manifested, and spiritual attractions and goodly motives have been attained. Otherwise, though good deeds be praiseworthy, if they do not spring from the knowledge of God, from the love of God, and from a sincere intention, they will be imperfect.

(‘Abdu’l-Bahá, Chapter 84, The Station of Actions Performed without the Knowledge of God, 1904 ca. -- AB00063)
56

When knowledge and action are combined, and obedience is joined with recognition, the result of the world of existence becomes manifest, and the mystery of the gift of the Loving Lord appears in the realm of existence.

(‘Abdu’l-Bahá, Words spoken on 1913-Jun-06 in Paris -- ABU1916)
57

There are those who believe that the cause of salvation is none other than a confession of Divine Unity. There are those who say: "This is not sufficient. Belief in Divine Unity must be combined with righteous deeds as prescribed by the All-Merciful."

(‘Abdu’l-Bahá, 1894 ca., to Aqa Abdu'llah -- AB07542)
58

After recognition of the Manifestation of Divine Revelation and the Dawning-Place of the Divine Inspiration, Who is the Sovereign of beliefs, all must act according to that which hath been sent down in the Book, for it is the Sovereign of deeds.

(Bahá’u’lláh, 1293-05 [1876-May] -- BH08150)
59

O Rida! This Wronged One has ever remembered His loved ones and counselled all to that which brings them nearer to God. Such nearness cannot be attained except through goodly deeds and praiseworthy conduct. Deeds and their acceptance are, in the first instance and highest station, dependent upon the divine unity.

(Bahá’u’lláh, 1306-11-19 [1889-Jul-17], to Aqa Muhammad Rida Nahhas -- BH01032)
60

Verily, he who is prevented by his deeds from attaining his ultimate end is among the perished ones, for deeds are not accepted except through turning towards God. Whoso turneth towards Him, verily he hath performed what God hath desired, and whoso turneth away is among those who have forsaken Him.

(Bahá’u’lláh, ca. 1289-1290? -- BH07487)

Blessed is the soul between whose intention and deed no difference is seen - whose intention is the very deed and whose deed is the very intention. And this is the station of the depths of the sea of oneness that was mentioned before.

(Bahá’u’lláh, to Aqa Muhammad Rida Nahhas -- BH00938)
63

O you who are yearning for the threshold of the Intended One!

In the previous Dispensation, there is a tradition which states: "Deeds are judged by their motives, and for every person is what they have intended."

64

This means that when a man has a good intention, that is, cherishes the desire in his heart for a righteous act, it is impossible that such an intention by anything but pure. whereas, in acting, it is possible that selfish reasons may have prompted it. For instance, it is possible that a man performs a good deed with a view to personal interst; such a good deed done is not separated from hypocrisy and insincerity. But when a man cherishes a good intention, it is impossible that it be prompted by any prejudice or be intended for anything but good.

(‘Abdu’l-Bahá, Words to Florence Khan, spoken on 1906-Jun-13 -- ABU1112)

As charitable works become praiseworthy, people often perform them merely for the sake of fame and to gain benefit for themselves, as well as to attract people's admiration.

(‘Abdu’l-Bahá, Words to the Master's entourage, spoken on 1912-Aug-01 -- ABU2127)

(‘Abdu’l-Bahá, Words to the friends, spoken on 1914-Mar-09 -- ABU1880)
67

The days when idle worship was deemed sufficient are ended. The time is come when naught but the purest motive, supported by deeds of stainless purity, can ascend to the throne of the Most High and be acceptable unto Him.

(The Báb, Farewell address to the Letters of the Living, 1260-08 ca. -- BBU0001)
68

The first food is the love of God. The second food is attraction to the breaths of the Holy Spirit. The third food is unity and harmony among all the divine friends. The fourth food is charitable deeds and sincere intentions. The fifth food is truthfulness and trustworthiness and kindness and purity of intention and service to all humanity.

(‘Abdu’l-Bahá, 1911-Jan-24, to Aurelia Bethlen -- AB03723)
69

Hold thou fast unto that which beseemeth thee throughout the Kingdom of earth and heaven, and that is a deed which is performed purely for the sake of God by His servants.

(Bahá’u’lláh, to Salman -- BH05160)
72

We verily behold your actions. If We perceive from them the sweet smelling savor of purity and holiness, We will most certainly bless you.

(Bahá’u’lláh, 1290 [1873] or earlier, to Mulla Baqir -- BH04818)
73

Deeds that are in accordance with the Book of God are clearly distinguished among all deeds, like pure fragrance among all scents. He says: "Set aside mere words. Adorn yourselves with goodly deeds and spiritual, luminous character." This evanescent servant hopes that the friends will be enabled to achieve that which is adorned with the ornament of acceptance before God. In truth, if a person is not enkindled with the fire of divine love and remains deprived of the companionship of true friends and counselors, his days are wasted and his life squandered, and he will return with complete regret and endless remorse.

(Bahá’u’lláh, 1301-09-09 [1884-Jul-3], to Shaykh Abul-Qasim et al -- BH02927)

(Bahá’u’lláh, 1293-05 [1876-May], to Haji Mirza Abul-qasim Nazir (Jinab-i-Nazir) -- BH00278)
75

Say: Let truthfulness and courtesy be your adorning. Suffer not yourselves to be deprived of the robe of forbearance and justice, that the sweet savors of holiness may be wafted from your hearts upon all created things. Say: Beware, O people of Bahá, lest ye walk in the ways of them whose words differ from their deeds. … Let your acts be a guide unto all mankind, for the professions of most men, be they high or low, differ from their conduct. It is through your deeds that ye can distinguish yourselves from others. Through them the brightness of your light can be shed upon the whole earth.

(Bahá’u’lláh, 1290 [1873] or earlier, to Mulla Muhammad Zarandi (Nabil-i-Azam) -- BH00846)

O Rida, We counsel you in all conditions to fear God, to goodly deeds, and to that which causes the manifestation of love and kindness. What does the Book say? That which benefits you. What has God commanded? That which brings salvation and bestows rest.

(Bahá’u’lláh, 1298-08-13 [1881-Jul-11], to Haji Muhammad Taqi ibnuh -- BH03329)
78

Love ye all religions and all races with a love that is true and sincere and show that love through deeds and not through the tongue; for the latter hath no importance, as the majority of men are, in speech, well-wishers, while action is the best.

(‘Abdu’l-Bahá, 1918-Dec-27, to Beatrice O Ashton -- AB01704)
79

A man born to this world should do many good deeds, as a garland maker makes garlands from a heap of flowers. The scent of flowers is carried no farther than the wind allows, neither the sandalwood, tager, nor jasmine. But the fragrance of the deeds of good men spreads to the ends of the earth, in all directions, regardless of the wind. (Dhammapada 4.10-11) A careless person, quoting much of the scriptural text but not living it, cannot share the abundance of the holy life, just as the cowherd, counting other people's cattle, cannot taste the milk or ghee. ...unless we practice the Teachings we cannot possibly expect the Faith to grow, because the fundamental purpose of all religions - including our own - is to bring man nearer to God, and to change his character, which is of the utmost importance. Too much emphasis is often laid on the social and economic aspects of the Teachings; but the moral aspect cannot be overemphasized.

Indeed when we see the increasing darkness in the world today we can fully realize that unless the Message of Baha'u'llah reaches into the hearts of men and transforms them, there can be no peace and spiritual progress in the future. His constant hope is that the believers will conduct themselves, individually and in their Baha'i Community life, in such a manner as to attract the attention of others to the Cause. The world is not only starving for lofty principles and ideals, it is, above all, starving for a shining example which the Baha'is can and must provide.

This love amongst the believers is the magnet which will, above all else, attract the hearts and bring new souls into the Cause. Because obviously the teachings -- however wonderful -- cannot change the world unless the Spirit of Baha'u'llah's love is mirrored in the Baha'i Communities.

Prayer and meditation are very important factors in deepening the spiritual life of the individual, but with them must go also action and example, as these are the tangible results of the former. Both are essential.

...Peace of mind is gained by the centering of the spiritual consciousness on the Prophet of God; therefore you should study the spiritual Teachings, and receive the Water of Life from the Holy Utterances. Then by translating these high ideals into action, your entire character will be changed, and your mind will not only find peace, but your entire being will find joy and enthusiasm.

The Baha'i community life provides you with an indispensable laboratory, where you can translate into living and constructive action the principles which you imbibe from the Teachings. By becoming a real part of that living organism you can catch the real spirit which runs throughout the Baha'i Teachings. To study the principles, and to try to live according to them, are, therefore, the two essential mediums through which you can ensure the development and progress of your inner spiritual life and of your outer existence as well.
