I beseech Thee by the Stream which hath flowed from Thy Most Exalted Pen in Thy most glorious horizon, to transform the hatred of Thy servants into mercy from Thy presence and loving-kindness from Thy court.
Praying for those who cause harm
prayer for opponents; enemies of the Faith
Editorial introduction
The hardest prayer to say is the one that asks God to bless the person who has wronged you. Bahá’u’lláh and ‘Abdu’l-Bahá say it constantly. They pray that the hatred of God’s servants be transformed into mercy, that the faults of oppressors be concealed and forgiven, that calumniators be aided to pure truthfulness and the treacherous made trustworthy, that those who mistake the friend for a foe and the antidote for poison be awakened and led into light. These are not vague wishes to be left in peace; they name real injuries, slander, greed, the devouring of people’s wealth, and they stand beside a plea that the sheep be protected from the wolves. Forgiveness and protection belong together, and so does the hope that an aggressor’s conduct will actually change. The Sermon on the Mount, with its command to pray for persecutors and its image of sun and rain given to just and unjust alike, offers the closest comparison, and a test of any claim that such prayer was unknown before [1]. The road leads on into loving one’s enemies, returning hatred with love, and the wider life of prayer that makes such love possible.
Selected passages
Lord, forgive them their sins and misdeeds, conceal their faults before all, and punish them not for what their hands have wrought."
O Lord! I beseech Thee by Thy mercy that encompasseth the righteous and the sinful, and embraceth the obedient and the rebellious, and saveth the perishing and the wayward - forgive their sins, conceal their faults, guide them to Thy straight path, and enable them to walk in Thy right way.
O my God, my Aim, my Object of Worship! Protect Thy sheep from the wolves of the earth, and adorn praiseworthy conduct with its finest ornament, that all may find their station and become aware of its fruits. For if Thou grant awareness, treachery will be transformed into trustworthiness, falsehood into truthfulness, and oppression into justice.
We beseech God to aid the oppressors to turn unto Him and to repair to the gate of His pardon and bounty.
We beseech God to assist the oppressors to turn back and repent. Verily He is the Forgiver of sins.
We beseech God, blessed and exalted be He, to aid the calumniators to pure truthfulness, the deniers to firm acknowledgment, and the opposers to manifest acceptance. Verily He is the Most Merciful of the merciful ones and the Fulfiller of the needs of all who ask.
O Thou Peerless God! The heedless count the familiar as strangers and consider the friend as foe. They imagine the morn of guidance to be the eve of darkness and regard the water of Paradise as scalding fluid. They oppress Thy loved ones, deem the antidote a deadly poison, and consider life-giving honey more bitter than venom. O God! Set them free and make them aware; awaken them and make them conscious. Deliver them from darkness and guide them to the center of light. Lead them out of darkness into light, guide them to the extended path, admit them to the praiseworthy station, and overshadow them with the banner tied by the fingers of Thy power in this Promised Age. Verily, Thou art the Mighty, the Loving!
O thou whom God hath shown in true visions that which will make his feet firm upon the Straight Path!
By God the True One, verily the heart is in sorrow, and the spirit is in distress, and the inmost heart is in severe pain from what hath befallen the Cause of God through calamities and the spread of calumnies from souls who are turned upside down. Therefore thank God for showing thee the vision, wherein is the greatest wealth [abundance] for a man. By thy life! Verily he is in what God hath shown thee. I beseech God to deliver him from it, for He is the best deliverer, and to save him through His grace and bounty, and guide him to the right path.
And I, by the life of God, weep blood for what hath transpired, and I steel myself against the fire of hatred, and I wail like one bereaved, and I say: O Lord! Strengthen hearts that have strayed from truth and wandered in the wilderness of doubt and plunged into an ocean of mirage and clung to a rope woven by spiders, and feared not the Day of Punishment. O my Lord! They are among Thy weak servants - deliver them through Thy power and might, and make for them a way out from the deep blind pit, and guide them to the path of faithfulness and the way of God-consciousness, that they may regret what they have done in violating Thy sanctity through wavering in the Covenant, for they were counted among those dwelling among the loved ones.
That vision was a true vision. Therefore pray that the Truth may deliver this soul from these perils and grant him fairness and waft to him a breath of faithfulness, that at least he may not make lies and calumnies the means of promoting hatred.
Four times he came and repented, and all the friends are witness that I again accepted him and overlooked his faults and showed kindness and love and observed faithfulness. Then when circumstances became so constricting for this servant that all joy and fragrance was cut off, and arrows of cruelty rained down like drops of rain, I saw no choice but to completely disappear from the land of destination. I departed for Tiberias alone and solitary, intending to stay permanently, and in that corner I was companion to sighs and laments. In brief, some peace of spirit resulted from the solitude, but the government would not allow me to remain - the official became persistent, expressing utmost fear and trepidation. I was compelled to return.
When I reached Haifa, I observed that this unjust one was not satisfied with this servant's exile, anguish, solitude and affliction, and related a statement allegedly from this servant which, God forbid, disparaged the Blessed Beauty (may my spirit be sacrificed for His loved ones). The transmitter mentioned it face to face without any shame. I endured every injury, corruption, sedition and cruelty from him and say nothing, despite having shown him a love that none has shown to another from the beginning of creation until now, as you are surely aware. Now he writes complaints to various quarters that I have wronged him and raises lamentations. "I endured being slain while my slayer complains." This person is like the enemies of the Blessed Beauty who complained about the Blessed Beauty while His blessed breast was torn to pieces.
O Lord! Thou seest those who are heedless of Thy remembrance and are veiled from the effulgent rays of the Sun of Thy Revelation, wandering in the wilderness of allusions and bewildered in the desert of veils. I beseech Thee, by Thy pure power, to manifest in the kingdom that which will draw all unto the court of Thy knowledge and bring them near to the city of Thy wisdom and knowledge.
O Lord! Thou seest Thy servants who turned away from Thee after having turned towards Thee, and were deceived by their wealth until they denied Thy right and rejected Thy favors and cast aside Thy gifts. O Lord! I beseech Thee by Thy sovereignty which hath encompassed all things, seen and unseen, to aid them to return unto Thee and to seek forgiveness before the gate of Thy pardon and to turn in repentance before the throne of Thy bounty.
O Lord! Aid those who deny to turn towards the court of Thy glory and to acknowledge what Thou hast sent down from the heaven of Thy utterance.
Thou didst mention Ahmad-i-Farsh. We beseech God, blessed and exalted be He, to protect him and ordain for him the good of this world and the next, and to forgive his father. He is the One to Whose generosity all created things have testified, and to Whose mercy all contingent beings bear witness. There is none other God but Him, the Forgiving, the Possessor of Great Grace.
Divine mercy hath preceded all and His bounty hath encompassed all. He is the Hearer and the Answerer. The hands of the detached ones are raised toward the heaven of His mercy. His generosity and grace are the cause and reason for the appearance of hope. I swear by the Sun of Truth which hath shone forth from the horizon of Muhammad's brow - peace be upon Him - that He hath never disappointed any supplicant, nor will He ever do so, and He hath never prevented any seeker from the ocean of His gifts. If there appeareth to be delay in the fulfillment of some hopes, this is due to His consummate wisdom, which none knoweth save Him. Were this station to be unveiled, all would testify to that which hath been mentioned and hath flowed from the pen.
Say: O my God, my God! Thou seest Thy chosen ones and trustees in the hands of the calumniators and the treacherous ones who are consumed by the fire of greed, passion, tyranny and wickedness, who devour people's wealth without any proof from Thee or evidence from Thy presence, and who desire naught but harm to Thy trusted servants. I beseech Thee, O Lord, by the Most Great Word through which the Sun of Divine Unity hath shone forth from the horizon of the heaven of Thy Cause, and by which the hearts of Thy servants and creation have been illumined, to aid the heedless ones and calumniators to be trustworthy, religious, truthful and pure. O Lord! Help them to return to the court of Thy glory and the gate of Thy generosity. Verily, Thou art the Ever-Forgiving, the Pardoner, the All-Bountiful, the Kind, the All-Generous, the Compassionate. There is none other God but Thee, the Single, the One, the Powerful, the All-Knowing, the All-Wise.
It is incumbent upon us to pray, and God confirmeth whomsoever He willeth in whatsoever He willeth. Verily thy Lord is independent of all the worlds. Whoso willeth, let him remain firm, and whoso willeth, let him return to the corner of oblivion forever and ever. It is incumbent upon us to raise our hands in supplication to the Kingdom of Mystery and seek forgiveness for all.

Questions to carry forward
- What changes when we pray for an aggressor’s qualities and conduct to be transformed rather than simply for a conflict to disappear?
- How can forgiveness, protection of vulnerable people, and accountability support one another?
- Which prayer most challenges the boundary of your concern, and what makes that boundary difficult to cross?
