Prayers for the people of the Bayán

prayer for the Babis; people of the Bayan

Editorial introduction

Prayer for a community begins where planning ends. The Báb asks God to pour upon the people of the Bayán a torrential rain of triumph, aid and succor, to send hosts of victory upon the letters of His Name, and to bless the Divine Point, the Letters of the Living, and every soul who has believed, from the first whom God has witnessed to the last. One prayer heaps divine name upon divine name, Glory, Beauty, Wisdom, Bounty, Splendor, as if no single attribute could hold the breadth of its longing. Bahá’u’lláh later prays for that same people with great tenderness, in a season of danger and darkness. Paul’s prayer that a young church be strengthened inwardly and rooted in love offers a kindred voice [1]. Such remembrance stretches the heart beyond its own circle. It leads on toward the power of prayer itself, toward the da’irahs and haykals of the Báb, and toward the painful story of how many among the people of the Bayán would turn away from the One they had prayed to recognize.

01

Therefore, O my God, by that torrential rain, do Thou send down upon the people of the Bayan the rain of Thy triumph, Thy aid, Thy victory, Thy assistance, Thy support, and Thy succor, and whatsoever Thou hast encompassed in Thy knowledge of the modes of Thy support and the manifestations of Thy victory, until Thou fillest all Thy heavens with the exalted might of the rains of Thy triumph and all Thy earth with the majestic glory of the rains of Thy assistance.

(The Báb, unknown (late Chihriq?), to Muhsin (Shaykh Hasan ?) -- BB00371)
02

O God! Bestow all Thy goodness upon them that have entered the Bayan, and send down, O Lord, the hosts of Thy victory upon the letters of Thy Name, the Most Merciful.

(The Báb, Ziyarat for the first and last to believe, on Friday, 1265 [1848-1849], to Mulla Ahmad Mu'allim -- BB00199)
03

O God! Purify all the mirrors of hearts. O God! Purify all the mirrors of souls. O God! Purify all the mirrors of hearts and then the spirits of those who have believed in Thee and in Thy verses, then their bodies. Verily Thou art the Most Subtle of the subtle ones. O God! Cause those in the Bayan to ascend to the highest horizon. Verily Thou art the Most Powerful of the powerful ones. O God! Raise those in the Bayan to the Most Glorious Horizon. Verily Thou art the Most Exalted of the exalted ones. O God! Aid those therein. Verily Thou art the Most Helping of helpers. O God! Protect those therein. Verily Thou art the Best Protector of protectors. O God! Forgive those therein. Verily Thou art the Most Forgiving of forgivers. O God! Enrich those therein. Verily Thou art the Most Bountiful of the bountiful ones. O God! Have mercy on those therein. Verily Thou art the Most Merciful of the merciful ones.

(The Báb, Panj Sha'n (Book of the Five Modes), 1266-04 ca. [1850-Feb] -- BB00005)
04

Have mercy then, O my God, through Thy mercy, upon all who have believed in the Bayan, that Thou mayest not cause them to enter the fire of negation, but rather hold them fast by Thy might to enter the paradise of affirmation, for the former is the source of all evil in Thy sight while the latter is the source of all good before Thee. Preserve me, O my God, from that which Thou lovest not, for it is of the tree of negation in Thy sight. Strengthen me, O my God, in that which Thou lovest, for it is of the tree of affirmation before Thee. Forgive, O my God, every male and female who entereth beneath the shade of the tree of Thy love, and judge, O my God, whosoever entereth not, for that is justice for the former and this is grace for the latter. There is no power nor strength except through Thee, and unto Thee do all return.

(The Báb, Du'a' 'ala'n-Nafy (prayer of negation) -- BB00141)
05

O God! Create servants in the Bayan who will thank Thee in the day of His manifestation through His manifestation, and praise Thee in the day of His advent through His concealment. For I have not witnessed among the people of Islam a goodly upbringing that would manifest Thy love, though the people of Islam are countless and all await the appearance of Thy Proof, weeping and supplicating throughout long nights. Yet when We caused them to hear mention of Thy manifestation in My manifestation, I witnessed no servants who would praise Thee or worship Thee or thank Thee, although all Thy creation, by night and by day, unknowingly praise and thank Thee. Therefore, O God, raise up the people of the Bayan with a goodly upbringing that their praise and thanksgiving may benefit them and not be lost.

… I beseech Thee by Thy glory to deliver, on the Day of Resurrection, all who are in the Bayan through Him Whom Thou shalt make manifest with clear proof, howsoever Thou willest, whensoever Thou willest, and wheresoever Thou willest. For I have loved that none should remain undelivered on the day of Thy manifestation, and I have loved that all who are in the Bayan, nay all who are on earth, nay all things, should be delivered to such extent that in the knowledge of Him Whom Thou shalt make manifest there remaineth nothing save that which is pleasing unto Him.

(The Báb, Kitab-i-Asma' (Book of Names), 1264 (late) or early 1265 [1848-1849] -- BB00003)
06

O God! Preserve everyone who preserves the Bayan with all its letters, even to a single point, and cast away anyone who casts away the Bayan, even if his veiling be from a single point thereof, and he fails to preserve it, for this is Thy sustenance for all Thy creation until the next Resurrection. I have witnessed no glory except in Thy love and Thy good-pleasure, and I would not exchange Thy love for all the kingdoms of the world and their riches multiplied, for these in Thy sight are as nothing in truth. Therefore, O God, strive to bring all to Thy religion lest any soul be consumed by the fire of being veiled from Thee, through might and glory from Thee and through force and conquest from Thy presence, not through what the weak are guided by and what they call to without power and authority, for this befits not the majesty of Thy countenance nor the beauty of Thy presence. Glory be unto Thee! There is no God but Thee. Verily Thou art the Most Powerful of the powerful.

(The Báb, unknown (Chihriq or Maku), to Mulla Husayn al-Khurasani, Ismu'llahu'n-Nazi' -- BB00326)
07

Therefore, O God, send Thy blessings upon the Divine Point and upon the Letters of the Living, and bestow through that Most Exalted Similitude and Most Resplendent Garment upon me and upon all who have believed in God and His signs, in every condition whatsoever befitteth the loftiness of Thy bounty and Thy gift, and the glory of the detachment of Thy generosity and Thy favor.

(The Báb, Du'a' li'n-Nuri'l-Abyad, 1265 mid-late [1848-1849] -- BB00254)
08

Then turn unto him who is established upon the clay of his existence and settled upon the dust of his paradise, and say: Glory be unto Thee, O God! Verily, Thou art the Lord of Glory, the Possessor of Glory, the Ordainer of Glory, and the Fashioner of Glory. How can I describe Thee, O my God, by Glory? Therefore, O God, send down the tokens of Thy might upon the Name of Thy Identity, which Thou hast placed above all Thy names, through which Thou hast caused the Qur'an to ascend, expounded the Bayan, opened the gates of heaven, and brought all things into the presence of Thy Oneness - the Countenance of Thy Lordship, the Sign of Thy Singleness, the Camphor of Thy Self-Subsistence, and the Essence of Thy Grandeur, which Thou hast freed from all similitude and names, and sanctified from all comparison and likeness.

And upon the manifestations of His Self and the gates of His might - the Letters of the Living, whom Thou didst create for the manifestation of the Point before all Thy names, for all else was created for It and through It. I beseech Thee, O God, by what Thou hast created for It before all things - and these are those sanctified names and glorified letters - to send down at this moment upon those who have been martyred in the path of Thy love that which befitteth the loftiness of Thy Countenance and the exaltation of Thy Sovereignty, and to send down Thy blessings upon them from me and from all things, at every moment, before every moment, and after every moment. And send down upon those who love them not all Thy retribution in every condition, before every condition, and after every condition. Verily, Thou art powerful over all things, and there is no might nor power save in Him, the Most High, the Most Great.

(The Báb, Du'a'a'l-Khamis li'l-Avval, 1265 [1848-1849] -- BB00228)
09

Therefore I beseech Thee by Thyself - for nothing can equal Thy justice, none can be Thy peer, none can resemble Thee, none can be Thy companion, and nothing can be Thy likeness - and by Thy Glory, Thy Majesty, Thy Beauty, Thy Greatness, Thy Light, Thy Names, Thy Might, Thy Words, Thy Wisdom, Thy Knowledge, Thy Power, Thy Command, Thy Will, Thy Honor, Thy Sovereignty, Thy Dominion, Thy Loftiness, Thy Favor, Thy Grace, Thy Bounty, Thy Generosity, Thy Kindness, Thy Gift, Thy Benevolence, Thy Glory, Thy Transcendence, Thy Utterance, Thy Inaccessibility, Thy Greatness, Thy Independence, Thy Splendor, and Thy Lights, to send down upon Thy loved ones in the Bayan, from the first whom Thou hast witnessed unto the last, that which befitteth the sublimity of Thy holiness and the exaltation of Thy glory.

(The Báb, Ziyaratu'l-Kull, 1265 [1848-1849] -- BB00207)
10

This is a letter from God, the Help in Peril, the Self-Subsisting, unto God, the Almighty, the Best Beloved, to affirm that the Bayan and such as bear allegiance to it are but a present from me unto Thee and to express my undoubting faith that there is no God but Thee, that the kingdoms of Creation and Revelation are Thine, that no one can attain anything save by Thy power and that He Whom Thou hast raised up is but Thy servant and Thy Testimony. I, indeed, beg to address Him Whom God shall make manifest, by Thy leave in these words: "Shouldst Thou dismiss the entire company of the followers of the Bayan in the Day of the Latter Resurrection by a mere sign of Thy finger even while still a suckling babe, Thou wouldst indeed be praised in Thy indication. And though no doubt is there about it, do Thou grant a respite of nineteen years as a token of Thy favour so that those who have embraced this Cause may be graciously rewarded by Thee. Thou art verily the Lord of grace abounding. Thou dost indeed suffice every created thing and causest it to be independent of all things, while nothing in the heavens or on the earth or that which lieth between them can ever suffice Thee."

(The Báb, Letter to Him Whom God shall make manifest -- BB00550)
11

Glory be unto Thee, O my God, Thou art well aware that I have proclaimed Thy Word and have not failed in the mission Thou didst enjoin upon me. I entreat Thee to guard the people of the Bayan on that Day in order that they may not pronounce censure against Thee nor contend with Thy signs. Protect them then, O my God, through the power of Thy might which pervadeth all mankind.

(The Báb -- BB00365)
12

O my Lord! Thou seest how the people of the Bayan have turned away from Thee and from Thy proof, and have disputed Thy verses after Thou didst come to them with a sovereignty that transcended all names and with evidences clearer than the sun at noontide, clinging to the letters of their own selves, turning away from the ocean of verses, holding fast to the hem of idle fancies, and denying that which has shone forth from the horizon of the heaven of power and might. O my Lord! I beseech Thee by the breezes of the dawn of Thy Revelation and by Thy fragrances which have perfumed the places wherefrom appeared the Manifestations of Thy Self and the Daysprings of Thy verses, to enable them that have turned away to turn towards the horizon of Thy oneness, to face Thy countenance, and to ponder that which hath flowed from Thy Most Exalted Pen in Thy Scriptures and Tablets. O my Lord! Deprive them not of the ocean of Thy bounty and the heaven of Thy grace. Verily, Thou art the Almighty, the Self-Sufficient, the Most Exalted. O my Lord! My heart lamenteth their heedlessness and remoteness. Teach them, O my God, Thy path and make known unto them that whereof they were heedless in Thy days. Who is able, O my God, to describe himself by any description before the court of Thy glory, O Lord of all names! The servant testifieth in this his station that all bounty is within Thy grasp and all mercy is in Thy right hand. Thou singliest out whom Thou willest with Thy care and Thy favors and Thy compassion and Thy gifts. Were it not for Thy grace and bounty, all creation would be in nothingness. There is none other God but Thee, the Lord of eternity, the Possessor of knowledge, and the Ordainer of good for the peoples. Verily, Thou art the Mighty, the All-Bountiful.

(Bahá’u’lláh, 1303-04-01 [1886-Jan-7], to Shaykh Muhammad Arab et al -- BH00016)

Questions to carry forward

  1. How do rain and gifts express needs that a community cannot meet through effort alone?
  2. What happens to our sense of belonging when prayer includes the first and last, the known and unknown?
  3. How might praying for an endangered religious community shape our conduct toward its members?
